We tried this kinda cool little place , Sandwich Shop Diner , because of a promotion deal . This was our first time there . Atmosphere was pretty cool , lots of things to check out . We had the standard eggs & bacon breakfast & what was supposed to be eggs and sausage , but came with bacon instead and only 2 eggs when I had ordered 3 . It was supposed to come with toast , but it didn’t . Brought this up to the waitress & she did correct her mistakes . She seemed timid , like maybe she was new . The food was mediocre . We also ordered a chef salad & a crescent city chicken sandwich to go . We ate those later on at home & they also were run of the mill . Cool place but the food quality could be better & the poor waitress needs more training .

I’ve eaten here several times now, and I feel like I’ve had enough experiences to give a fair review. My apologies in advance for the length of this review.

If you’re someone who likes variety at breakfast, the Sunday buffet is a really good deal. I enjoy having multiple breakfast items, and that kind of variety usually gets expensive if you order à la carte at other restaurants. Because of that, the buffet feels like a huge savings. Everything on the buffet was hot and well stocked. The biscuits are more like canned, layered biscuits, but they’re still good. We especially liked the gravy, biscuits, sausage patties, bacon, chicken strips, pancakes, and hash browns. The eggs were standard scrambled eggs and mixed in well with everything else.
The only awkward part of the buffet is getting to it. You have to walk down a narrow hallway past the kitchen, which can feel a little uncomfortable when people are passing each other. Because of that, I’d recommend sitting in the buffet area if possible—it just makes things easier.
On our third visit, we tried the burgers and sandwiches, and they were really good. The burger reminded me of a classic drive-in style burger. I ordered the mushroom Swiss, and while it was solid, I wish they offered an aioli or more savory mayo option. That said, it was still very good with the mayo packet they provide. The bun was pillowy soft, the burger was tender, and it held together well without falling apart.

My fiancé ordered the pork tenderloin and said it was good, though I can’t speak much on it myself. The fries were cooked well. One small downside for me was the upcharge for choosing a side other than chips. Chips work fine with a sandwich, but for burgers, I wish there were more included options unless the restaurant makes their own chips. That’s more of a personal preference than a dealbreaker.

Overall, we’ve really enjoyed the food and have already been back several times. I can definitely see us returning. With the current cost of eating out, this place feels like a good value—especially the Sunday buffet. The gift card deal they’re running is also a nice bonus.

I approached this establishment with genuine enthusiasm, as diners are a rarity in our area. Upon arrival, I was greeted by courteous staff, and the restaurant itself appeared well-maintained and clean. Unfortunately, the culinary experience did not align with my expectations, particularly given the price point.

The burger I ordered was made with what appeared to be unseasoned, frozen patties that lacked any depth of flavor. The buns tasted inexpensive and slightly stale, and the toppings seemed carelessly assembled. Equally disheartening was the portion of fries—approximately twelve in total—which cost an additional $4 on top of a $10 burger. For a party of three adults and two children, all ordering water, the final bill exceeded $80 after gratuity.

To be fair, my wife reported that her turkey club was passable, though unremarkable, while the chili I ordered bore all the hallmarks of being poured directly from a can. The disparity between the cost and the quality of the food was striking, especially when the fare more closely resembled gas station cuisine than a sit-down diner experience.

I will say, their buffet brunch looked quite good, but due to the timing of our arrival, I didn’t want to chance eating the food that had probably been sitting since an hour or two prior.

In its current state, I can see this restaurant may struggle to sustain itself unless it brings the caliber of its food in line with its pricing. A more thoughtful approach to preparation and ingredient quality could make this a local gem, but regrettably, my experience fell far short of that potential.

Homey, comfortable diner with that great small town feel. A reasonable menu and well-prepared dishes, and the wait staff was fun and efficient.

Not sure how this place has the reviews that it does. My husband and I have been wanting to try it and heard good things about the Sunday brunch buffet. We took my mother with us, who is in a wheelchair. The inside is very crowded and doesn’t have much room for someone in a wheelchair. If you want the buffet, you would have to wheel the person all the way down the alley to the back patio to access it. However, it was probably a good thing that I just got my mom’s plate for her since the concrete where the buffet tables were set up had large holes that my husband (with two good legs) almost fell in. Now on to the food….the buffet was not stocked well and what was there seemed old. We were there for over an hour and they never brought out bacon the entire time. The biscuits were canned, ham had no flavor, the eggs were a bit watery, and the sausage was equivalent to sawdust. The gravy was decent, the flies really liked it! If you want a colon cleanse, I would suggest the buffet, otherwise you might try your luck with the menu. Given the price though, Walgreens would be a cheaper option. $77 for 3 people is crazy given the standard of the food. I wish I could say the service made up for some of it, but again not that great. Really disappointed as we had heard such good things, but we definitely won’t be back.

Quaint cafe. Been for breakfast and lunch and we’ve like it so much, we’ve purchased handfuls of gift certificates, just for us to use!

Always wonderful staff, and the food is tasty!

Similar to the diners of the 1950’s. This music themed joint is awesome! With juke box like music playing.

The food is amazing North American cuisine. Featuring surprisingly awesome choices on the menu. I’ll let you come to the place yourself and see.

Remodeled and better than ever. You can often find the owner inside making the food.

A nice little place with old school diner vibes. The ladies working the dining room at breakfast were cordial and accommodating, and my breakfast came out pretty quickly! I’d say $13.64 for the Special + hash browns and a hot mug of coffee with top offs was a bargain!

I take my sandwiches very seriously and so do the folks at The Sandwich Shop Diner, a cozy restaurant on the main drag in Collinsville, IL. This place is a real STL metro treat. The menu isn’t overwhelming. They have good, reliable, and fun burgers and sandwiches that all come with chips or french fries for a couple bucks extra. I highly recommend you take your family and friends for a great burger.

We were greeted with kindness, but the food was mediocre. For being a sandwich shop, and paying $15.00 for a BLT and fries I just want to receive something good.. It did not appear to be busy as we were the only ones sitting inside, yet our $3.50 upcharge of fries were served cold. Sad that it was a disappointment and we won’t be returning.
