I just moved here a year ago & Ive always passed the Root Cellar & never knew what it was. My friend suggested we go for some dinner last night & I was more than pleased with my experience! I ordered the root cellar burger & a baked potato & it was fantastic! The burger was a great portion size, super fresh & cooked exactly the way I ordered. I was in love with the goat cheese & bacon bourbon jam!! Definitely a great combination. My potato was also delicious & had all the toppings. Our server was very sweet & timely with seating us, taking our order & checking on us. Im excited to go back! My only suggestions would be to make it stand out a little more on the road & a little more decor on the inside to make it cozier. Otherwise I loved it and will be back!

Ordered Kale salad and the kale had not been oil massaged previously so it was scruffy and crunchy hard for a salad. I couldn’t eat it. And I love kale when it’s prepared properly. I make it myself all the time . Grilled shrimp were fine. They were small but adequate. I told waitress that kale had not been prepare properly and couldn’t eat it. She didn’t take it off the bill so guess I’m not going back for kale salad. Or anything. I tired to give very polite feedback in restaurant. I wish you the best. Thank you.

This was my first and last visit here. A total rip-off with awful food, misrepresentation, and a high price. I drove about 30 miles as I had called and was told they had Hoppin Johns, a traditional Southern New Year’s Day item. I don’t know what country they’re from, but it wasn’t the Southern United States, aka “You ain’t from around here are you?”. Steamed rice with black eyed peas dumped on top is NOT Hoppin John’s!
The pork loin meat was hidden by sauerkraut and hard to find any pieces of meat. Several pieces of pure fat pieces were in but very little meat.
The collards were okay, but not near as good as Lizard’s Thicket.
The extra black eyed peas in a small condiment cup were 4$ each and nothing but mush.
And last two very small bits of cornbread, each less than a bite.
I told almost the whole staff that I found it all very unsatisfactory but rather than addressing my complaint I got a “Have a nice day!” so I left.
Both of us found the food not good and not prepared well. After we shared our negative experience with others we found (not counting our poor experience today) that two thirds (66%) of other people thought it was not a good place to eat.

The food here is always amazing. I’ve door dashed many of times. I suggested for us to visit the restaurant tonight. My husbands first time. There was a large party there. They were only seating customers around this large party..that wasn’t the problem however, it was when the hostess asked Helga if she wanted us in her section. My husband saw Helga grimace her face at us. He didn’t tell me what he witnessed until we were waiting on our appetizer. We decided to eat what we ordered and leave from where it was obvious she didn’t want to serve us. Too many other places in Lexington that will happily welcome us. It’s sad because the kitchen is definitely doing their job well in that establishment.

I ordered the Chicken and grits to go with Mac and cheese and a baked potato. The chicken was so salty that I had to remove the skin to continue eating it. To be fair, when I cook at home I don’t require a lot of salt b/c I rely on other seasonings. If you like salt, you’ll love the chicken. The grits and baked potato was lack luster. The Mac and Cheese was okay. For the price, yeah I’ll probably come back in 8 months. Heh

I’ve been here a few times. I think the thing that got me this time, was when I asked for a sparkling white wine they gave me some nasty rose’ that was definitely not sparkling. I’m not a wino at all but was really looking forward to something sweet. I had the meat loaf Mac n cheese and a baked potato. The potato was very good. The meat loaf..probably won’t get that again. My daughter ordered the pulled pork egg rolls with pimento cheese. Those were interesting. The fries were good and our waitress was very nice. It was a little expensive. Without the app and wine I guess it wouldn’t have been too bad. I will go back again though because I know they have some great dishes.

Our server was brand new and really made a great impression with her positivity and attention to detail (reading back the order). Somehow the orders still didn’t come out exactly right but again she was great. The food was okay, the location is great and the decor was clean if not a bit dated (no dust or cobwebs). If you’re in town and looking for a bite this place will hit the spot. I had the blackened fish sandwich with bacon and a side of brussel sprouts, my dad the steak sandwich, and my sil the fried chicken and okra. The soup of the day was the best flavor, everything else just needed a little something else (fresh bread for sandwiches, seasoning on sides, and a little less grease on the fried foods). If you’re local check them out and support a local business.

Reading these reviews tell me one thing. Some of you guys are either crazy or just disgruntled individuals. The service was great. Megan was super nice and didn’t hover. She was there if we needed something but didn’t make us feel rushed. The food was amazing. I had the ribeye and collard greens. Both were absolutely excellent. My wife had the blackened salmon and Brussel sprouts. I can’t STAND salmon but guess what. I’m ordering that salmon next time. It was great. Great prices as well. 10/10

This is not coming from a place of anger or bad intent. Our previous visits to the root cellar were 4-5 stars easily. Today we ordered what we normally order. The fried chicken was ok but the grits were cold and lumpy. The beans that they charge $4 for looked and tasted like they came out of a can. The macaroni and cheese was cold and flavorless. And the cornbread they are known for also was cold and not pleasing. Overall, the person who prepared our food had absolutely no care about how our food tasted. There was no love in our food. It was a disappointment because the root cellar is usually solid choice for good food. Again, this is not coming from a negative perspective of someone who wants to damage the reputation of the root cellar. I hope they read this and make the necessary corrections for the food to return to it’s prior goodness. For the price of the meal, they really should make a better effort.

This was my first time visiting The Root Cellar, we had the southern egg rolls and livers for appetizers, the shrimp and grits and meat, and three for lunch. The food was ok but I did have high expectations so I don’t know if I should have lowered them. It’s a good lunch spot for Southern food just a little bland for our taste.
