Originating in Houston in 2011 The Rice Box planted its roots on a corner in The Montrose district where it has had the privilege of serving reinvented Chinese classics weekly ever since. While opening the second truck in 2013 to operate at a local University of Houston, there was a reawakening of Chinese food happening; it was the right time to open our first permanent location and bring everyone delicious, elevated American Chinese take-out classics like General Tso, Sesame, Sweet Sour and Kung Pao Chicken our way, ALL the time, in any weather, every day!

We enjoyed almost everything here: the food, the service and the atmosphere. I ordered the chow fun noodles with tofu and it was impressively good. I’m glad they served our food in boxes because of the generous portions. The staff was friendly and the decor as a mix of blade runner and anime.
My minor nitpick was the restroom. It was dark (as in lighting) and the toilet… Well it tried to flush.

The service here was really friendly, we were greeted warmly when we entered and offered to go bags on our way out with a big smile and friendly demeanor. We had 2 different classics (honey walnut shrimp + general tso chicken) and 2 street eats (crab rangoons + scallion pancakes). The first thing I loved about the food is the packaging it was served in which made it easy to take home because the portions were very generous. I eat with my eyes first and I was hungry because everything was visually appealing and really looked delicious. The taste matched, of course, and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly which dish is best. I’ll say that there was nothing that stood out that we didn’t like, but we REALLY LOVED the scallion pancake with the curry sauce and the honey walnut shrimp. Oh, and the noodles. OMG the noodles. I took some of them home as leftovers and they didn’t even have time to get cold in the fridge before I was tearing in to them again.
We drove ~45 min to eat here after seeing pictures of the food and we weren’t disappointed. Well worth the drive and I hope we are able to visit again.

Overall, the food was great. I would say it’s a little bit overpriced, but I would say it’s worth it. The service was phenomenal. Definitely wouldn’t mind returning. On the downside I would say that the interior was a bit underwhelming compared to their Instagram profile and what I was expecting when I walked in. It’s also very small and the AC appeared to be broken so it wasn’t a good environment to sit down and dine in.The customer service was phenomenal and the food was ready when I arrived, which is always a great thing.

This was our second time ordering food from this location. They redeemed Rice Box in my mind as the first location we tried near river oaks was absolutely not worth the visit. This location has great staff, its always clean, and the atmosphere is pretty chill. They decor is a futuristic fusion of neon and anime. The food is definitely worth the minor wait and price. 10/10 a must have if you are in the mood for some good eats, great staff interraction, and the place looks good on your eyes while you wait.

We got the chicken lo mien curry & the curry shrimp fried rice , I ask for extra spicy & it’s just so amazing I loveee itttt I come visit at least once a week, but can eat it more than once a week .. the staff is really nice & they bring your food out to your vehicle so nice

So I had finished up with work late and had a hankering for Asian food. I’d never tried Rice Box but I was close to the Heights location and it was open late. I submitted my order via DoorDash and drove the three minutes to Rice Box. My order was ready faster than the estimated time (surprising ly fast, even) and pickup was easy. The decor is cool, and given the speed I had somewhat low expectations as to the food quality. I was pleasantly surprised though!
I ordered the Mongolian Beef, extra spicy, with the normal veggies, fried rice, and a chicken egg roll.
The spice level on the Mongolian Beef was really nice (spice is very subjective, but the extra spicy shouldn’t really put anyone in the hurt-locker), the veggies were tender-crisp, and everything tasted fresh.
The fried rice is nicely done, and I really enjoyed the egg roll as well.
I initially had doubts as to the value, but after getting home and eating, I found it a fair portion, and given the quality, a good value.
I’ll be adding The Rice Box to my rotation, and look forward to trying other offerings soon!

I love the rice and the cute little boxes they come in. Services more than adequate and pleasant. The atmosphere is just as good. Or my problem lies is the parking and it does seem to take a good minute for your food to arrive while you have this wonderful aroma around you. Maybe the aroma is making me prejudice. And I do not know the ins and outs of the operation. What I do know is that the food and establishment is good enough for a return

Wow, great food all around. Everything we tried was flavorful and satisfying, but the lava cake is an absolute must-try, don’t skip it.
The atmosphere is super anime-ish and fun, with mostly bar-style seating inside, so it feels casual and quick. It’s clearly geared more toward takeout, but there is a cute little seating area outside if you want to hang out and eat there.
Great food, cool vibes, and a perfect spot whether you’re grabbing takeout or doing a quick sit-down.
