Review – 2026-01-21 – The Retreat
For today’s ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club Otto and I ventured out to a restaurant that we’ve driven by many times. In fact, if you’ve ever driven down Canyon Ferry Road between Helena and East Helena any time in the last couple years, you’ve probably seen their sign out in the middle of a field. Yes, we’re talking about The Retreat. The Retreat is the best (and only) restaurant located inside the Helena Regional Airport. Their winter hours are from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm. We arrived just as they were opening their doors.

The menu offers a nice assortment of fancy sandwiches and sandwich wraps. We both ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe with fries. Our waitress, Camrenn, took our orders promptly and advised us that our coffee would be out as soon as it was done brewing.

Camrenn did an amazing job checking on our table and keeping our coffee cups full. Speaking of the coffee, it was very flavorful and fresh.

Looking around the restaurant , I could tell that it had been remodeled in the last few years. Everything is nice and clean, with modern matching tables and chairs. There are multiple TVs playing with no volume. One was on a sports channel, one was on a cooking channel and one appeared to be on a music channel which was providing the Boomer music that was playing in the background. (Boomer music is popular music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.) The dining area is nicely decorated with a “taste of Montana” feel; barn siding on the accent wall, and artistic works depicting bison, antelope, and bears. There is plenty of seating for groups up to 4 people. The overall appearance is very clean and comfortable.

Otto has been hesitant to visit here due to a bad experience when he was here at a meeting with the Gideons. But that was several years ago under the previous owners. Now under new management, this place has been called “The Retreat” for a little over two years.

Our meals arrived, nicely presented on parchment paper covering flat plastic trays with plenty of room for ketchup. Our only complaint is that we could have used a few more fries. The half-pound burgers were cooked exactly as we ordered them. (I’m always concerned when a restaurant doesn’t ask you how you want your burger cooked, but that wasn’t a problem here.) The fresh tomatoes, lettuce, red onion, and pickles added a crispy, delicious decoration for our burgers, while the fries were lightly seasoned and perfectly cooked.

Without prompting Otto said, “I take back all the negative things I’ve said about them. This was a really nice experience.“ With prompting he added, “I would come here for a quick lunch.” I would definitely agree.

I’ve heard it said that all airport restaurants are overpriced and not that good. The Retreat at the Helena Regional Airport defies that bit of “wisdom” and offers a decent meal at a decent price. I’m excited to go back and try some of their other tantalizing menu options. I encourage you all to give them a chance to change your mind about airport restaurants.

It wasn’t too bad for an airport restaurant. There was only one guy taking orders and bringing food out. service was a bit slow but for the amount of people he was serving, I was impressed. The burger was good after I added salt. Fries were delicious!.

Atmosphere was open, airy, and comfortable. Bar seating and couches by a fire. Perfect cup of breve coffee and the woman there were friendly and accommodating to my 5 year old.

Stopped in before my flight. The staff was very friendly. Food OMG YUM! I noticed other patrons were cleaning their plates just as I had. Didn’t waste a bite. They also have a bar if you wanted a drink before your flight. I will come here just because in the future. Cheers!

This is more a critique than a review because I CAN’T review the place!! 10:30 to 3:00 for an airport restaurant!?!? Utterly useless. Never open when I fly in or out!

Stopped by for lunch this weekend. They have good options for lunch or a quick meal. Jason was great and very attentive. He was welcoming, knowledgeable, and made great suggestions. Everything was tasty! The prices were a little higher than around town, but to be expected at an airport. Overall, everything was fantastic, and we will definitely be back!

The food was so bad I couldn’t eat it – didn’t eat it. The chicken on the cobb salad must have been cooked a month ago, frozen, and reheated in a microwave. It didn’t look or taste like chicken – it was hard and rubbery. The fact that they felt confident serving that and charging $17.50 for it just makes me mad.

Service was awful. Two young women working and complaining about something in their lives using vulgar language. They were very unpleasant. Ordered two Bloody Mary cocktails. Was charged $43!!!! They were made with Clamato and very little vodka.

Grabbed a salad before my plane boarded. The veggies were fresh and the dressing was great! Reasonably priced for airport food.

Lipstick on the beer glass. Playing a rerun of a football game from a week ago. When we asked to have the channel changed to the one playoff game that was being broadcast right now, we were told we had to wait for a coworker. The coworker worker showed up and said she wouldn’t change anything. I thought Helena airport was hoping to increase use so they don’t have to close. ‍♀️
