Personally, the best salmon I have had in a long time. Cooked simply, seasoned well, and delicious. Absolutely perfect!
The appetizers were just okay. Ask about the menu and how things are cooked. I did not. If I had, I would have ordered
differently.
They seem to be super receptive to answering questions about the menu.
The artichoke hearts were deep fried not pan fried. They were okay. I would not reorder them personally. Everything else was lovely!
I will definitely return every time I am in the area. Best place to eat in LaCrosse.
You should also try Dollarosas and Schubys if you are in the area.
Food? We started with the appetizer of goat cheese and honey. It was delicious… And it was presented in a cute way in a miniature mason jar, with a handful of baguette slices. Unfortunately, the bread presented more as”Dehydrated” or “old and totally dried out,” as opposed to “toasted,” which probably would have been a better option. A combination of goat cheese with honey is a can’t miss appetizer, and my guests loved it, though.
The Croque Madame Sandwich was served on bread that was so thick that my guest could not take a bite. She opted to take it home and eat it later, when she could attack it better with a knife and fork. Another guest had ordered the French onion soup and seemed pleased with that, for which I was grateful. Two more of the group ordered the beet salad, which was a visual stunner… Unfortunately, though, The salad was heavy with pickled shallot but lacking in beets! And I think there was supposed to be goat cheese on there somewhere, but I could only find one little smear at the bottom of the plate. I guess the word would be “disappointing.”
We ordered one dessert…some type of bread pudding?…for the table to share, since no one seemed much interested in dessert. I didn’t have my camera or I would’ve taken a picture of the sad little strips of dehydrated apple peels…?? I suppose it speaks to the restaurant’s insistence on using every single part of its produce order (and I can’t help but think that maybe McKenzie tried to dress it up a little bit, back in the kitchen before she brought it out)…?? They weren’t ARTISTIC, really…the three irregular little strips just kind of looked like apple peels had blown on to the top…? The bread appeared to be the same thick-sliced “Texas Toast” that predominated the croque madame… And the “pudding” lacked any kind of creaminess or custard-y quality that is standard in a bread pudding. Eh. Unimpressive.
OK, so there were four of us and I think the food total was just south of $90. I am told that I over tip…but we really DID enjoy our server, and I was so happy that we were in her section. So at the end of the day, we were out of there for $115 for 4 of us. and I know that that is considered be high for the Coulee region. But we had a great table in the corner, where we didn’t disturb anyone, and our server kept us supplied with drinks and anything we wanted. So, while I acknowledge that that’s a lot of money to spend for lunch, this group was worth it.
I am extremely lucky in being able to travel quite a bit… And a daughter lives in Manhattan where prices are even steeper…So I was glad to have such a great afternoon for that price.
