We typically celebrate a birthday here each year, but since we were out of town, we scheduled dinner for Valentine’s Day instead. It was a prix fixe menu, and every meal began with their Uni Toast.
I’m not usually a big uni fan, but our server explained that this uni was flown in from Japan and differs from the Santa Barbara variety we’re used to. He was right. It was light, delicate, and beautifully balanced. An excellent way to begin the evening.
For our starters, we selected the Maine Scallop Crudo and the Fiori di Zucca Fritti. The crudo was exceptional, with a bright citrus element that made the scallops taste incredibly fresh and elevated the entire dish. The Fiori was also beautifully executed and a strong start.
We did experience a hiccup. We had 6 PM reservations, but after the appetizers, the kitchen got backed up. The staff handled it graciously and offered complimentary drinks, which we appreciated. Still, it was unexpected given how early in the evening it was.
For mains, we ordered the Land & Sea and the Périgord Black Truffle Risotto. I have a personal rule: if risotto is on the menu anywhere, I order it. This one delivered. The black truffles elevated it beautifully, and it was rich and deeply satisfying.
The Land & Sea was more mixed. The lobster was unfortunately chewy. The Wagyu was fine but not as memorable as expected, and the potatoes didn’t enhance the dish. Individually, the components were high quality, but together they didn’t quite harmonize. It felt more focused on presentation than flavor, and at this price point, it needs to be both.
Dessert was visually stunning, truly a work of art. I found it refreshing and beautifully composed, though the tart elements may not appeal to everyone.
Of course, the setting is part of what makes this restaurant so special. The seasonal decor, outdoor heaters, and soft jazz create a timeless, old-Hollywood atmosphere. Service remained polished and attentive throughout, even during the kitchen delay. Juan took wonderful care of us, and it was a pleasure meeting Lizeth Ramos, the GM.
And as a final touch, as we crossed the bridge toward valet, our car was already being pulled up. Seamless.
Will we return? Yes. The ambiance and service continue to make it special. At this level, though, the food must consistently match the magic of the setting.
Tucked inside one of LA’s most iconic hotels, the Bel-Air Bar is a quiet, refined space where everything—from the service to the setting—feels intentional.
The lobster pasta was delicately cooked and beautifully presented. The Espresso Martini? Easily one of the best I’ve had. What stood out even more was the atmosphere: calm, elegant, and full of thoughtful details.
It’s the kind of place where guests seem to know why they’re there—graceful, unhurried, and fully present. You don’t feel like just a visitor here; you feel like part of something quietly exceptional.
