My mom took me out for a belated birthday dinner, and it was both of our first times dining at the Red Ox. We arrived around 4:30 pm on a Wednesday and were seated immediately for the two of us, which was lovely.

I started with a filthy martini (one part vodka, one part olive juice)… and they nailed it. Exactly what I asked for. My mom ordered a whiskey old fashioned press, which she enjoyed.

For appetizers, we ordered the French onion soup, deep-fried mozzarella, and bacon-wrapped scallops. My mom also had the soup of the day, which was a turkey pot pie soup. Everything was very good overall. One small note on the scallops, and this is important for context: I personally have a strong aversion to seafood, and my mom is usually careful not to order seafood around me because even the smell can make me nauseous. However, scallops are usually an exception, as they don’t tend to have a strong seafood odor. In this case, there was no unpleasant smell at all, which I appreciated. That said, the scallops themselves appeared under-seared and very pale, and the bacon was undercooked. Not raw, just soft and not crispy. My mom agreed it could have used a few more minutes. A minor miss, but worth mentioning.

For my entrée, I ordered the French dip, which came with carrots… and honestly, the carrots deserve their own moment. They were tiny, perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned, buttery, and balanced with just the right amount of sweet and salty. I love carrots, and these were exceptional. Highly recommend.

My mom ordered a Wednesday special trio, which included barbecue ribs, pineapple glazed ham, and a turkey dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. I’ll note that the ham itself was delicious, but the pineapple glaze wasn’t quite for me personally, as it leaned a bit too tangy for my taste. That said, the turkey was phenomenal. I had a bite, and it was moist, flavorful, and absolutely something I’ll come back for. The mashed potatoes and gravy were excellent. I love stuffing, but this one wasn’t my favorite; it tasted slightly sour or underdone to me, though that could simply be a preference thing. I’d still order the turkey dinner again without hesitation.

Because it was my birthday, our server Jenny surprised me with a slice of chocolate cake, which was incredibly sweet and thoughtful. I was very full… but yes, I ate the cake, and it was delicious. We also split a Pink Squirrel for dessert, which was rich, nostalgic, and the perfect way to end the meal.

Service was excellent throughout the evening. Jenny was warm, attentive, and paced everything perfectly. Food came out efficiently without overwhelming the table. The hostess was also welcoming and kind.

The dining room was clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated. The lighting was just right, not too dark. We also arrived at a great time, because shortly after our entrées came out, the restaurant quickly filled up.

One small suggestion: the website mentions half-price apps and drink discounts, but it isn’t clear that those specials are bar-area only. Not a huge issue for us, but clearer wording online would help manage expectations, especially for guests who can’t sit at high bar seating.

Overall, this was a really special dinner, especially after years of hearing about the Red Ox and never going. More positives than negatives by far.

Final rating: 8.5 / 10
We’ll absolutely be back… especially for the turkey dinner and those carrots.

Great food Highly recommend to get reservations. The bar service was a disappointment, we had a party of 8 and waited for a bartender to serve us, we’ll we’re still waiting. Our waitress however was just super! We all sat down and ordered drinks and everything went as smooth as could be. The waitress (Krystal?) Was just as nice as a person could be ♥️ She had everyone covered with the food ordered to the drinks ordered GREAT JOB! It was a great experience and very enjoyable, hope for the same to you

We were seated immediately upon arrival. We were there at 4pm. And it sure did not take that place long to fill up over the dinner hour. We ordered a few appetizers for our table and I was sure to save room for dessert. The crab Rangoon‘s were very tasty. The artichoke spinach dip was amazing. The shrimp in the red chili sauce was out of this world!. Amanda was our server and she was very attentive. For dessert I tried the blueberry lemon cake , oh yeah, glad I did.

I’ve been a long-time customer of the Red Ox in Appleton, so this review is especially disappointing to write. I was very disappointed to learn that they have discontinued their Chicken Marsala, which has always been my go-to dish. Because of that, I ordered the haddock trio instead.

Unfortunately, the haddock portions were extremely small—more like perch fillets than haddock. I’ve attached pictures to show the portion size. One photo shows the haddock with seafood dressing after just one bite, and another shows the Jack Daniel’s haddock with brown sugar glaze, also after one bite. The size speaks for itself and was very underwhelming.

What made this experience worse is that I brought business associates with me for their first visit, and it wasn’t the impression I had hoped for. I’ve enjoyed many good meals here over the years, but this visit fell well below expectations. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as I’d like to see the Red Ox return to the quality I’ve come to expect.

Visiting town for our first game at Lambeau and decided to stop here for food. The steaks we had were perfectly cooked. The Haddock trio and jumbo shrimp were outstanding. If you’re visiting the area for the first time, this is the place to go.

The service was amazing . Hard to come by these days . A very classy old school super club vibe . Extensive menu with many specials . Getting there and ordering before 5PM would be wise for the pricing is way cheaper with great specials . We had steak and fish. The steak was cooked beautifully and seasoned perfectly. Also the tenderloin tips with mushrooms and vegetables were above average . Broiled haddock was amazing , very flaky and not overcooked . We would come back again most definitely

My Husband and I went for Valentines meal and I wasn’t expecting the meal I was served. We have been here a few times and always highly recommended The Red Ox to others, but now I’m not so sure. The atmosphere was very nice. we had reservations for 3:15 and were seated right away which was good the bar was full and would have been awhile to get our drinks so we ordered at the table. Waitress was friendly and took our orders in a timely manner and food came to table in an acceptable time. The only problem and the reason I gave the food a 3 star was I ordered Seafood Alfredo and the sauce was runny and the food didn’t seem hot so I took a noodle from the center of the dish and it was basically room temp. the bowl was just warm to the touch. The waitress did take the dish back to the kitchen and my dish was prepared correctly with a thick Alfredo sauce and was warmer.

This is our go-to place for a romantic, high quality, yet affordable meal. Large menue. Old time dinner club vibe with great cocktails, outstanding prime rib, steaks, and seafood, French onion soup, just to name a few. attentive staff. BEST OF ALL…WITH A RESERVATION YOU WILL BE SEATED PROMPTLY WHEN YOU ARRIVE. PLEASE BE ON TIME. They even serve veal, lobster, and Alaskan King Crab Legs. Nice selection of wines and desserts. A great place for small family memorable meals. Easy to find. In Appleton on Oneida just off of hwy 10 on the East side of the street.

We got the salmon and the pork chop. The salmon was good and we opted for the bourbon glaze. I would take a pass on the pork chop due to its dryness. I added shrimp to the pork chop, which was also burnt and chewy. The asparagus was charred, if you like that flavor and a little woody. The French onion soup and Italian soup were both fantastic. Our waitress failed to mention that there was a separate menu for appetizers. Look for the drink menu if you are interested in apps. Had we known, we may have ordered the escargot, it sounded great. I would definitely go back again however I would hope to have a different server and I would probably get the prime rib. Everybody was eating the prime rib and it looked good.

I had the stuffed tenderloin with mashed potatoes, and my wife had stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon. Both were excellent and cooked just right. I had an old fashioned which was delicious and my wife had an extra dirty martini which she said was the best she’s had to date. Service was great even on a Saturday night with a group of 12.
