We had the blooming onion with house horse reddish sauce, awesome by the way, and I had catfish filets and sides and my wife had 2 tacos. We both really enjoyed the food. Will diffinetly go back. Maybe on the all you can eat catfish nugget night!

Yesterday, at the insistence of my good friend Kip, we had Supper at The Port “the Place to Be” in Bridgeport, Illinois.

I had long known about The Port, and had heard of its Reputation as a Great Place, but I had never stopped in before… silly me, huh?

I went to the Door to open it for Kip (it’s kinda a funny Competitive thing we do), and when we entered, suddenly I felt like I had just entered one of the Great “Gin Mills” that I had come to know, and love from Back in the Day when I was in Canada and working for Sperry Rail Service.

“Gin Mills”, as we called ’em, are what are typically known in this Region as Taverns… and a “Great Gin Mill” is the kind of Place that you actually want to bring the Wife, Kids, your In-Laws, Extended Family, Business Associates, Co-workers, Your Boss, Your Boss’s Boss… Just about Everybody within your Social Circle.

After Kip and I were guided to our Table (which could have comfortably accommodated a Party of 6), we were Hosted by the charming and endearing Hallie, who was Prompt, Courteous, and Considerate of us two Old Guys that hadn’t a Real Clue of what we were going to have for Supper.

Now, Kip decided on Ribs, but Hallie had to Break his Heart and inform us that they had run out of Ribs. Kip then changed tack, and decided to have a Steak and a Baked Potato… and he must have been fixated on Potatoes because he ordered Potato Salad for his Second Side.

Hallie then turned to me with a smile and asked what I would have.

I said that I would have what Kip had.

Hallie was all over that like the Atmosphere Covers the Earth, but she knows her Stuff, and finally got me to Break Down and substitute Fries for the Potato and Coleslaw instead of Potato Salad. These were actually the Selections that I wanted to make Initially, so Kudos to Hallie!

After Hallie departed, I took leave of Kip for a moment and just took in the Atmosphere. People were enjoying themselves and their Meals inside the Cool Climate Controlled Environment while outside the Weather was more than a little bit Humid and somewhat Unsettled, threatening of Rain or Possibly Thundershowers.

Now, I need to Confess something here, and that is that I am a Smoker. I don’t Recommend it and I try not to Influence others to start…

… but, every once in awhile, because I do smoke, I find out about Something that I might have otherwise missed…

I approached the Bar which is a Centerpiece of The Port, absolutely Beautiful in it’s Presentation, but before I reached it, I noticed another Hostess stepping out into the Dining Area to check on her Customers. I asked her if there was a Designated Smoking Area… hoping to get permission to just go ’round the ‘Back of the House’ and kinda hide out and Meditate on All that I was experiencing…

… and she said “… Yes, we do have an Area, just step through that Door right there and you will find it!” as she gestured towards the Door…

Now, this wasn’t the Front Door… but it was actually across from it, and I made the Assumption that I would be exiting to the Back of the Establishment…

What I found, was not only a nice Place to Hide for a Smoker’s Moment, but an Entire Outdoors Dining Area, set up in such a way that anyone like myself that Craves Dining “al Fresco” considers absolutely Heavenly!

I about Fainted!

Inside, two Employees (One of which was introduced as the Owner) welcomed me in to share a Moment and join with them. We chatted about Bridgeport and what had brought me to The Port… and we Recollected about the late Gene Hugh, a Railroader on the B&O that like so many, had become a Mentor to me about 50 odd years ago… and we talked about the Imprint he had left on Bridgeport where he had lived with his Family… and his Imprint on myself when I was not quite an adolescent in Clay City, Illinois…

Time Flew like an Arrow and suddenly, Hallie had found me again, and announced that my Supper has been Set at the Table with my friend…

I went back in and sitting with Kip, enjoyed the Finest Steak Dinner that I have had in Many Years.

Tonight, my wife and I drove out to try this place. I will say the service was excellent and our waitress went way above and beyond. However, the reason we were there was the food. I know I can be picky when it comes to BBQ, steaks etc. I got the pulled pork and basically all I tasted was sauce. No flavor of the meat. BBQ sauce is supposed to compliment the meat, not be the taste of it. In my experience, when people drown their food in sauce it’s for a reason, and its usually the taste or the quality. We got an appetizer, and it was pretty run of the mill. Our food came out fast and our waitress was fast with our drinks. The service is the only reason it’s 3 and not 1. We will be back at least one more time because my wife wants to try the fish, but it will not be one of our regular spots to go. Way overpriced and just not worth it.

We ate there on a Friday night around 7:30pm. It was very busy. We were seated right away and even had a large group. Service was friendly and fast. Food was good.

Well went their few weeks ago had several tables open, my dad in old and can’t stand very long, they didn’t want to seat us because they said the cook was very busy, I understand this but, you could still put us at table and take order later??? I thought this was very disrespectful , I wasn’t very happy with how we was treated, I said my dad can’t stand that long, you can put us at table?? I thought that was very rude!!!! I don’t know if I’ll be back even tho the food in good.

Food and service is always great. Dana, the bartender is attentive, funny, and makes some amazing personal concoctions.

Update: 10/2025:
I Passed my church on the way thinking it was Wednesday service. ‍♀️ I meant to order the single but ended up with the double pork chop dinner instead. This was nothing short of divine temptation!

Have you ever been tempted by the flesh? Because these chops were sinfully good! I need to go to church just to repent for what I did to at least one of them. Meat sweats? Yeah! Regrets? Not a single one. ‍♀️

My husband is a blue collar worker who goes to this bar once a week to play pool league. Tonight, he was approached by Alesha Schauf (name might be misspelled) an employee. She approached him as soon as he entered and informed him, he needed to change out of his work boots before entering the building. Her reasoning for this is that the boot “damages” the floor. She told him if he was unwilling to change his shoes he should leave and not come back. So, unless you have new or like new shoes apparently you are not welcome at this establishment. Neither my husband nor I will be spending another cent at this establishment.

She did NOT politely ask him. She confronted him loudly in front of everyone. She did not pull him a side and ask if he could go knock some of the mud off his boots. She loudly told him to get new shoes or not come back. In the 13 years that my husband has worked in construction he has NEVER been told to get different shoes or do not come back. Floors get dirty you clean them. Are you suggesting that anyone who has mud on their shoes should avoid your business? What do you do when it rains and people drag mud in tell them to take their shoes off at the door? I would like to point out that the boots my husband was wearing are a new pair and if I need to provide photo evidence of how NOT muddy those boots were last week I will. Don’t worry we will be sure to pass the word around to all blue collar workers that their shoes are to dirty for your establishment. This entire situation seems to stem more from you employees not wanting to clean the floors than anything else.

The entire situation was handled poorly by your staff. At no point in the past year was my husband pulled aside and asked to please knock mud off boots before entering. At no point was my husband pulled aside and politely told that the mud off his boots was causing an issue and to please bring different shoes to wear in the future. Even this confrontation was not done in private but was instead in front of everyone present at the bar. Your staff member did not quietly and respectful address the issue. It was loudly and publicly done in a way meant to shame my husband for his boots being dirty. I hope you can learn from this experience and in the future approach situations like this in a more friendly respectful manner.
