Lets start with the complimentary chips and salsa. Greasy chips and metallic garlicy salsa…nope.
I then got the carne guisada/enchilada plate. What I got was basically tough beef tips in salty gravy…the seasonings were…horrendous. Think, country style beef tips and gravy with cumin and garlic in it to make it “exotic”. And, yes, I’ve had guisada from several Mexican and other latin owned establishments (even outside of Lubbock). This one wasn’t it. One bite and I couldn’t touch it any more.
The enchilada…let me tell you that the “queso” is out of a can. The cheese looked like it was on Ozempic and anemic. The corn tortillas…that’s Mission brand 100%. The refried beans were decent. The frozen margaritas…strong…but that was fine with me.
Atmosphere…it’s giving Taco Tuesday at the RNC. My friend and I are latino. He’s Mexican and I’m Cuban. We felt so out of place. Not a drop of melanin or ethinicity in that establishment. The original Plaza (granted it was almost 10 years ago) had better ambiance than this place. Given the area it’s built in…it tracks. Literally a box with tables and canteens from Party City for decorative lights…that didn’t work.
If you’ve made it this far, I’m currently at home recovering. Does this review sound dramatic?…depends. But we were…disappointed doesn’t even cover it. HEB pays better homage to Mexican food.
Also, they took care of 15 of us quite well. The hostesses did an excellent job of giving a polite and professional first impression.
I just moved to Lubbock and will definitely be going there. I had Chicken Fajita Nachos last time and they were delicious. Give it a shot!
I’ve heard mixed reviews on the Plaza but now firmly side with those who say they’ll never go back.
There are better Tex-mex options in town, don’t waste your time or money on this place.
We had a chimichanga and carne asada fajita tacos. Plus the sauces were delicious.
