Spent a few days at The Sanderling and Paper Canoe is right across the street. Ate there twice it was so good.
I had the fried oysters both times, so hot and fresh and crispy. Also tried the shrimp and grits. I’m always interested in trying a new version, and this one was outstanding. The large blackened shrimp were excellent, and the grits were creamy.
The scallops and risotto were also especially good.
Hostess was very accommodating and got us in the second night we went without a reservation, and with only a short wait. Well worth it!
I’m sure reservations are a must in the summer.

Third time, third excellent experience. Get reservations – it’s packed even in the off season.
Leslie, our server, was absolutely top tier. Attentive, but discrete. Helpful, noticed the slightest issue with the table (replacing flatware nearly instantly), and genuinely fun to talk to.
We all swore the food was even better this year than last. Great wine list. Great grilled Romain salad, wedge salad, catch of the day (pompano), and killer shrimp and grits.
The only quibble I have is that it gets very loud when full (solid wood everywhere…floors, tables, all of it). At our table of 6, I couldn’t hear the guy at the other end. Invest in some sound deadening, please. But otherwise please keep up the magic!

This is a great restaurant, but – in my opinion – it doesn’t rate five stars for two reasons. The food and drinks are, frankly, expensive. Also, one of the dishes recommended by other reviewers and our server, shrimp and grits, tasted like one thing, the andouille sausage found throughout (the exception… two pieces of asparagus clearly added to the plate after the rest of the food).

Great place. Very accommodating, we had 2 separate reservations for 10 people and they were able to pull two tables together so we could all sit together. All the meals were great. Most got the wellington which was amazing. The steak and chicken was great as well. The ravioli was good, but nothing amazing. Stick to the steaks, fish, and chicken. The service was also very good. I would recommend and go back.

WONDERFUL! My husband and I came to the Paper Canoe for a last minute date night and we both loved this restaurant. We stopped by without a reservation but they were able to get us a table. ALL of the staff were incredibly kind and friendly. While we waited for our table to get ready they served us cocktails on the patio while we watched the sunset. The food came out quickly, piping hot, and cooked perfectly. We loved the French inspiration and unique specials. We highly recommend the Here Piggy, Piggy cocktail, crème brûlée, the Wild Catch, and Seafood Pithivier. We will definitely be back and will recommend the Paper Canoe to our friends visiting Duck!

One of the best meals we’ve ever had—hands down the best restaurant in the OBX!
From start to finish, our experience at The Paper Canoe was phenomenal. My wife ordered the Chicken Kiev and I had the Wagyu steak—both were absolutely incredible. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the garlic chips brought back memories of Japan. Unexpected highlight? The Caesar salad! At first glance, it seemed a little unconventional, but the flavor was outstanding, especially with the white anchovies on top.
My wife also tried the tomato tartare and enjoyed every bite. Even though we were full, I couldn’t resist the homemade crème brûlée—and I’m so glad I didn’t. It was the perfect sweet ending.
Service was top-notch: our table was ready on time, they honored my request for a window seat, and the pacing of each course was flawless. It truly felt like the kitchen was cooking just for us. Between the food, the service, and the views—this place is a must-visit. Can’t wait to come back!

oh wow. we got there an hour early and we sat there and watched the sunset (it was magical) while being served drinks. we got seated, and were immediately served water by an army of employees and a few minutes later fresh bread. i also loved the sweet tart lemonade mocktail (wow.). i ordered the fish oscar; known by me as the best sea bass i have ever had. jeff the server(i think his name was, he wasn’t our server), also known as the original og, remembered us from last year, probably because of how underdressed we were haha. this place is really good and the atmosphere is really homey. i almost wrote “this place is really good, but…” but and i have nothing to say after but, which goes to show how great this place is.

A magical dining experience on the waterfront of the Currituck Sound. We arrived in time to watch the sunset with mocktails on the flower-adorned deck—absolutely stunning. The only reservation available was a 9 PM spot at the bar, which worked out perfectly. The service was excellent, and the food was outstanding. We started with the duck confit egg rolls and grilled romaine with burrata—both delicious. For entrées, we chose the seafood pithivier and beef Wellington, each encased in a perfectly flaky pastry and bursting with flavor. We finished with their unique take on key lime pie—light, tangy, and delightful. A truly enjoyable late-night dinner
