Jose was an outstanding waiter. You can always tell a real Tex-Mex restaurant by the Barbacoa they serve. The refried bean and cheese taco was very good also. What a great breakfast. Breakfast is served Saturday and Sunday only starting at 8am. Price was great, food was great, and the service was great. Definitely recommended

Authentic TexMex restaurant near the Strand. Food portions were huge. Hot salsa very good. Beef fajitas portion was enough for 2. Shredded chicken salad was bland. Had to use salsa for dressing. No jalapeños offered. Went at 2 pm on Sunday. Hardly any servers to seat all people waiting in line. Good value.

11/29/2025: Great food, service, and cool historic place to dine. I had the flautas. They were crispy and flavorful. My friend had the chimichanga. I had a bite and loved it! The salsa is great with a little kick. The margaritas are sweet and tasty. I loved their Spanish rice too. Very big portions. Easily could have split, but we couldn’t decide on something we both wanted. Prices are pretty good. Our bill was $48 before tip. The service was great. We were checked on regularly and they were very friendly. Parking is limited, but they do have a handful of spaces in a lot near the restaurant. They also have street parking.
Highly recommend for the food and service.

This is one of the longest standing Mexican restaurants on the island, with a solid fan base. When I tried ordering to go on the last order, they sent out overcooked sopapilla cheesecake, and that quality control is an unfortunate impression. I did not ask for a refund, because I ordered with the intention of providing a review to more local restaurants. The dinner was ok, but overall the experience left more to be desired, and it will be a while before I order from here again.

We ordered takeout from here, and I was craving a good taco salad. Their taco salad was only like 9 bucks, and it was huge and so delicious. The crust on the shell was amazing. The meat was fresh. The veggies were fresh 10 out of 10.Recommend my husband got a burrito and something else but ate his so fast. I didn’t get a chance to take a picture. But I have attached a picture of mine. I will definitely be coming here every time I want a taco salad.

When on my lunch break, no time to check my food, get back to work to eat, and food just burnt. Now I’m mad because I can’t leave to take it back. So I had to eat the not burnt part only . Deluxe nacho. But the bread pudding was delicious!

What a beautiful and historic place. The staff was attentive to detail with the food order, beverages, and cleanliness. A great anniversary dinner.

Come hungry! With affordable prices, large portions, and incredible food (chef’s kiss), the service was the best, provided by two servers who ensured our cups were refilled without needing to ask and that our food was satisfactory. The atmosphere was warm and cozy.

This establishment definitely holds up to its name “The Original Mexican Cafe” as it looks like it’s never been renovated in decades…total origanele.
For the food- the guac is mid… missing seasoning.. I added salt and lemon then it tasted good. The chicken taco al carbon was good. The fajita chicken seasoned with grilled onions definitely did the trick . Charro beans lacked some flavor, added some salt then it became flavorful. Rice was decent. Water tastes filtered and didn’t have a bad aftertaste as some restaurants do.

Some friends and I stopped here for a quick bite of an early dinner. Amazing all around for food, service and atmosphere. We will definitely make this a must stop for our occasional Galveston trips.
