They were somewhat busy, which is always a good sign.
The employees were all friendly, happy, and smiling, which is also a good sign.
My son was already seated when I entered. I was greeted by several employees as I walked towards where my boy was seated.
Jill, our waitress, appeared almost instantly when I sat down and asked if I knew what I would like to drink, as she handed me a menu.
I warned her that I am a coffee-snob, and may not like their coffee, but I was willing to try it. Plus, I saw my son already had a cup, so I figured it couldn’t be that bad. A special shout-out to Jill; you were perfect! Polite, happy, courteous…I could go on. Thank you, Jill!
I’m sorry we tied up your table while my son & I “caught up.” I hope we tipped you enough to make up for it.
I’ll be back soon, anyways, and I will ask for you!
The coffee was good, the food was great, and the smiling staff made it a perfect experience (all of the staff seemed very happy to be there, thank you all for that.
And THEN it got even better…I’ll tell you at the end…
My son ordered the Irish Eggs Benedict, I had the French Toast with eggs/bacon/homefries.
The food was cooked to perfection and delicious.
Unbeknownst to me, behind me was the dessert cooler, that my (adult) son was staring at while we ate (he’s so much like me ).
Unfortunately, we had no room for dessert and didn’t get any to go, as we were headed to meet my mother at Smithfield Woods (assisted living).
Upon leaving, we both stopped to drool some more in front of the dessert cooler (jk, we weren’t literally “drooling,” tho I’m sure if we had been, the staff would have rushed right over to clean it up with smiles on their faces!)
I decided to get one slice of German Chocolate Cake to go, and surprise my mother with it (she has dementia now, but this little Irish woman used to make the best German Chocolate Cake for my German father and their 2 sons )
My mother ate the whole slice and I could see that she enjoyed it. I checked with the Smithfield Woods staff at the desk to make sure my mom could have this when I arrived. Wow, I felt like I was going to have to pull a “Benny Hill” and run from a dozen women chasing after me
Apparently, you do NOT want to say “Chocolate Cake” in front of a group of working women, who may have missed lunch due to work, especially when you have only ONE piece of cake with you!
On that thought, I went back to The Orchard Grille, to buy more cake and surprise the staff at Smithfield Woods with it.
Knowing exactly where the dessert cooler was, I went in, and saw only one lonely piece in the cooler.
A waitress walking by asked me if she could help me. I asked her if they had more German Chocolate cake.
She pointed to a man sitting behind me (at the bar) and stated, “you want to talk to him, he is the owner.”
I think this was the first time that I’ve ever seen a bar-owner sitting at HIS bar, SOBER, and NOT drinking alcohol (thank you, Rob, for breaking the stereotype!)
Rob, the owner, explained that his 82 y/o (or 92, I can’t remember) mother makes the German Chocolate cake, so “go easy on her,” he asked politely.
I can see why Rob’s staff were all smiling. He’s such a nice man. When I sat at the bar to devour that one, last, lonely slice of cake (c’mon, I could NOT leave it behind…and it tasted just like the German Chocolate Cake that my own mother used to make) I saw Rob teaching a new? employee how to mix, shake, and pour a drink. I told him that he was a good teacher.
I would give the Orchard Grill and all of the staff here ten stars if Google would let me.
Fantastic!
I cannot wait to return–which might even be later today!
We didn’t order it, but I added the menu pic as we’ve all seen a “hungry-mans” breakfast…but THIS made me chuckle
Don’t forget to tip your servers!!!
The food meets the standard, and gives you exactly what you’d expect at a place like this. It’s by no means phenomenal , but you get decent portions at fair pricing.
You can find places like this all over RI and New England. They serve their purpose and do it well.
I recommend this place for their fried seafood dishes, and the breakfast.
The Orchard Grill: a nice breakfast spot with friendly staffers and very reasonable prices. The food is standard breakfast fare. Hash browns are little cube shaped potatoes that taste wonderful! Plenty of convenient parking a long a main road.
The menu is lengthy, again reminding me of the old family restaurants we used to go to.
I decided to get something really classic – a turkey dinner.
It was really good – not better than mine, but better than others I’ve had from other places. The presentation and flavors reminded me of the Roast House that used to be at the Lincoln Mall. This is where the nostalgia really kicked in for me.
The turkey was moist and well prepared, the stuffing was also moist – it could have used more herbs and maybe some more modern, trendy additions – but it was exactly what I expected when I tasted the turkey.
The potatoes were good, and the gravy pulled everything together. A little bit of cranberry sauce is always welcome, but again I’d like to have had a slightly more complex flavour.
The yam was sweet and a good addition, though it was, at times, too sweet.
Would I return?
There are other places that do this same kind of thing, but I’d probably pop in if it were not for the fact that they are cash-only. I generally stay away from actual cash, so going to the ATM was a pain. At least they had one, though…
