The Old Schoolhouse Tavern in Merrimac, Wisconsin is once again open to the public and serving food after a long absence. Preciously it spent a few years as a private event venue only but that has all changed with new ownership. Come by and see us. We think you’ll like it.

It’s at a good location so I’m sure they get quite a bit of traffic from devil’s head ski resort. I was exited to see it open for regular restaurant seating. On our way out tonight we stopped in. We had pretzel bites that the menu said they come with cheese sauce and mustard ours didn’t. By the time the waitress came back we didn’t have many pretzels left. My husband ordered fish tacos and they were ok. 3 tacos for $10.99. You get what you pay for. My BLT was ok. My sons mac-n-cheese was good so was the three cheese flat bread.
We ordered a refill on the beer and got a completely different brew than what we previously had. Over all just ok. Will we be back? Possibly. Place has a neat look and a lot of interesting pieces. We were not impressed with food/menu selections.
Advice to the staff: read these reviews and make a few small steps to improve. You have something good here but like, if everyone is telling you that food is coming out cold, then just make it come out hot? Its not that hard to do. The staff seemed a bit all over the place and they were busy but we still had slow service seemingly due to internal confusion. So yeah, make the food hot, couple small updates to dishes, and you’ll be good. Otherwise people such as myself will not return and return customers are your bread and butter.
The atmosphere is kitschy and fun, though the decor feels a bit unfocused. The space was also dimmer than expected given the number of windows. The menu could use stronger color contrast, as everything blends together in low light and makes it harder to read. I eventually noticed the small table light, which helped, but clearer design would go a long way. Having napkins already at the table would also be a nice touch.
We started with the Warden bites, which were flavorful and satisfying.
The Reuben was generously stacked with corned beef and had a good amount of cheese. It leaned a little wet and slightly saltier than expected, but still enjoyable. The tots were crispy and well seasoned. The only minor drawback was a faint fryer oil taste on both the tots and the bites.
The fish tacos, which come as three, were good overall. The fish was slightly overdone, though that worked for her preference. A sauce on the side would really elevate the dish.
The Bloody Marys were tasty, and splitting a Blue Moon rounded things out well.
We’d come back, especially to check out the dollar wings on a busier night and see the place with more energy.
For an appetizer, three drinks, a sandwich and tacos, our bill was $60.00 which is a tremendous value.
We also got a Philly cheesesteak and it was pretty much just a burger patty.
