Every dish feels thoughtfully prepared, and the cozy, authentic atmosphere makes the experience unforgettable. Highly recommend for anyone craving excellent pub food in a warm, Irish setting.
We really enjoyed getting to know the owner and his family and hearing the story behind why they opened the pub. You can feel that sense of pride and community in everything they do. The service was welcoming, the food and drinks were great, and the whole place already feels like somewhere we’ll come back to often.
So excited to have a spot like this in town! Highly recommend checking it out.
Can’t recommend enough and can’t wait to come back!
By the time we left that first day, we were already old friends with the staff. The place just feels like home and we are treated like family. My wife and I have frequented a number of Irish pubs over the years and the old Fitz already numbers among our favorites.
So, let’s start with the atmosphere. One look and you understand that this place was worth the wait. On our first visit, we took a table by the hearth and just soaked it in. As the *first* customers? It was all we had hoped for. Warm, cozy, and welcoming. Rich woods are complimented by, frankly, sturdy and comfortable chairs. No corners have been cut, and it shows. Once you arrive, you are going to want to stay.
The food was delicious. We met the chef, Eric, and learned his plans for the expanding menu. The shepherd’s pie was filling and tasty, and the Irish stew has a flavor my wife and I are still talking about. Absolutely wonderful. The curry chips are a particular favorite of ours, but we have eaten our way through the menu.
The corned beef? Cured in house.
Sauerkraut for the Rueben? Fermented in house.
The fish and chips? Walleye for the fish and your choice of imported malt vinegar or house made tartar sauce.
The patty melt is one of the richest burgers you’ll have anywhere, served on a nice dark rye.
The bangers and mash use imported Irish sausages.
The Irish eggs? Ambrosia. Forget mozzarella sticks, these are what you’ve been craving.
It is all delicious and I could go on for hours. The food really is that good. The menu does fluctuate a little, based on availability, but you just cannot go wrong with any menu choice. It isn’t bar food, it is elevated pub food, and one bite will prove that to you.
The whiskey list is a combination of old favorites and new things to try. With three Guinness I received three perfect pours, and the bar crew really know what they are doing. Spirits come in a generous 2 oz pour, although you can get a single ounce by request.
The owner, Anthony, was on hand and he truly groks the concept of an American/Irish pub. He spoke with us at length about the choices made and the intended vibe of the pub. The idea isn’t to recreate an Irish pub in the US, but to create an immigrants pub instead. That touch raises it head and shoulders above all of the “plastic paddy” pubs, trying to be something which they are not. Funnily enough, in many ways, the Old Fitz is a lot more authentically Irish than those claiming to be.
This is NOT the sort of place one expects to find in Marion. A pub like this might normally be found in Chicago, New York, or Las Vegas, but finding the Old Fitz in Marion is just plain exciting. It certainly surpasses anything similar in Indianapolis.
Music is beginning to take place in earnest, as rudimentary sessions are already beginning to take place. Jesse, the house musician, has been joined by a variety of folks playing guitar, banjo, accordion, tin whistle, and bodhrán. Talk about a great atmosphere.
This is a family establishment, run by a family that welcomes your family, and encourages you to join theirs. There is no friendlier place to be found in Marion.
Now, I cannot fathom why a reviewer would give 1 star for a lack of local beer options… at the pub. Let’s be clear, one will not find PBR or Coors, nor many microbrews served here. The drinks served are curated to enhance the atmosphere and patron experience. If it isn’t elevating the place, the Old Fitz isn’t wasting the effort. That said, they have a small selection of area beers that are worth trying – it just isn’t a hipster bar.
If you are within driving distance of Marion (and most folks are) you owe it to yourself to make the trip. You will not regret it.
One thing we really appreciated was seeing how hands-on the owners are. It reminded us of our own days behind the bar, and you can tell that’s exactly what makes a business like this thrive.
I tried to snag a photo of their massive fireplace, but I didn’t want to intrude on the diners enjoying their meals next to it (it’s that cozy!). Speaking of meals, the food passing by our table looked absolutely amazing. We haven’t tried it yet, but we are already planning to go back this weekend to dig in!
Highly recommend checking them out if you’re looking for that genuine Irish atmosphere.
