Our waiter approached the table wearing a full-on eye patch, a bandana, and what I swear were boots that made a little clomp with every step. He slapped down our menus and said, “What be yer pleasure this mornin’?” Naturally, I thought this was a theme diner I didn’t know about, so I smiled and replied, “Ooh, I didn’t realize it was pirate-themed!”
He froze. Narrowed his one good eye at me. And, in a completely flat voice, said:
“It’s not.”
Then he leaned in closer and whispered:
“What’ll ya be havin’, matey?”
The rest of the meal continued in this strange dance: he’d throw in pirate phrases like “avast” and “yarrr” while pouring coffee, but if anyone pointed it out, he’d deny it. At one point he handed me a ketchup bottle and called it “the red treasure,” then immediately followed with, “I don’t know why I said that.”
The food? Solid diner fare—big portions, crispy bacon, fluffy eggs. But honestly, I barely noticed because I spent the whole time wondering if this was performance art, an inside joke, or just a man living his best secret pirate life.
At the end, he dropped the check and said, “May fair winds carry ye safely to the cashier.” I thanked him and said, “You are a pirate!”
He shook his head, sighed deeply, and muttered, “Everyone always says that.”
In conclusion: great food, mysterious pirate server who refuses to break character, or perhaps refuses to admit character. Either way, 10/10 would return for the high seas experience. Just don’t call him Captain.
Great old photos of the town on the walls and also photos of places to see and hike as well.
