A True Gem in Ames, and the Only Place My Bernese Mountain Dog Wanted to Spend His 6th Birthday

The Mucky Duck has become a breath of fresh air for us while settling back into life in the States, reverse culture shock is absolutely real, and somehow this little corner of Ames has been the one place that feels unmistakably like home.

Proper home.

The kind where the food tastes authentic, the atmosphere feels familiar, and the people greet you with genuine warmth instead of “what on earth is that giant dog doing here?”

Marcus, the owner, is the heart of it all. In true British terms, he’s the definition of a proper gent, gracious, composed, welcoming, and a man who carries himself with quiet class.

The kind of person who makes everyone feel like a regular by their second visit.

He graciously allowed us to host my Bernese Mountain Dog’s 6th birthday at the pub, his first birthday back in the U.S. since returning from Britain.

It was a special moment for us, and Marcus treated it with kindness instead of confusion, which already makes him a national treasure in my book.

The food? Hands down the most authentic British menu I’ve found not just in Ames but in all of Iowa.

Everything tastes like it was made with care, nostalgia, and the right amount of cheeky pub-comfort energy. For anyone craving real British flavors, this is the place.

The Mucky Duck isn’t just a pub, it’s comfort, community, and a little slice of Britain tucked perfectly into Ames.

And for anyone navigating a transatlantic adjustment (or just looking for a good pint, a proper pie, and a warm welcome), you’ll find it here.

Highly, wholeheartedly recommended. And Theodore says thank you for the birthday pint (of water)

The service was outstanding and friendly, plus it’s obvious that the regulars enjoy the location also. This makes for a comfortable, no rush location to grab a wide variety of beers on tap, in addition to a wonderful menu. The bar is not large, so I can imagine it can get very crowded in the evening. The outdoors looks inviting for summer time visits. I look forward to returning in the near future.

Small little place, but very tidy and clean. Felt very comfortable and welcoming. Waiter (sorry I don’t recall her name, red hair) was very accommodating, giving us samples of several beers, explaining them in detail. She was very friendly and knowledgable. We had fish and chips and cod cakes and both were hot, fresh and delicious. We’d definitely come back again if passing through!

Was looking for a place for breakfast on a Saturday. The owner Marcus was kind and personable. But I think it’s obvious that his manager Christi runs the show! Amazing bloody, great omlette, fantastic service. 10/10 must visit when in town.

Great place to eat. There’s a reason it’s packed so many nights.

Food is served hot and fresh, and quite a variety on the menu. Servers are super nice and it’s a calm enjoyable atmosphere.

Definitely plan to go back again!

Had a blast at Mucky Duck’s Pub in Ames, Iowa during a pit stop on my way back home from a family reunion. This place is seriously cool, with a dog-friendly patio, killer classic rock tunes, and a menu that will make your taste buds do a happy dance. Right off the bat, the dog-friendly patio was a game-changer. We could enjoy our Scottish egg, Fish and Chips (they even have a gluten-free version), and the German Platter while our fur-bag chilled in the shade with his own cool water dish. The vibe at Mucky Duck’s Pub was super chill. The classic rock tunes from Styx, to Blondie, to Queen, driving through the speakers made it even better. As a beer lover, I was in heaven with the wide selection of brews from all over. Mucky Duck’s Pub knows their stuff when it comes to beer. They’ve got something for every taste, whether you’re a connoisseur or just looking to try something new – great if you love Untapped. Sydney made our experience even better with her friendly and attentive service. She was on top of everything and had great recommendations and was absolutely the best. Mucky Duck’s Pub has plenty of parking spaces, so you don’t have to stress about finding a spot. The vibe is simply awesome, and you’ll leave with a smile on your face and a satisfied belly. Cheers!

First time at the Mucky Duck. I’m glad I finally went! The food was very good, service was good, the atmosphere was great. Loved all the authentic English stuff for sale. Would highly recommend it to anyone.
Had the Onion Rings, which were very good, the fish and chips were good too. The fish was lighter and flaky inside, outside was crunchy and delicious.
Overall, it was very good, and I will return too!

Small little pub. Nice atmosphere. Great food. Cheese curds are delicious! I had the tenderloin & crisps. Both were delicious! Sad that I forgot to grab my leftovers. Boyfriend had the German platter & said it was delicious too. Will go back.

Woke bar. Blm painting. Whatever bathrooms. I am more right leaning but some may not come here due to atmosphere. It was loud and busy. Food and service great. People say it’s a college bar. I could not pay these prices as a college student. Poutine and Fish and chips amazing. Will come back for food not atmosphere.

Great food, atmosphere, and service! If you wanna try British food, this is the place.

I heard from others that the scotch egg was good so I ordered it but honestly, it was a bit overhyped! It is fairly yummy for what it is, but if you’re not a fan of boiled eggs you probably won’t love this. Still recommend trying it though, and order it cold (I made the mistake of ordering it hot).

The German platter had a fair amount of food for its price and it tasted great. Sausages were juicy & had great flavor, the German schnitzel was super crunchy & tender, and the mash & gravy was delicious too. The sides of picked red cabbage and sauerkraut fit perfectly too.

The one thing I 100% recommend everyone to get is the sticky toffee pudding. It literally made me speechless, the cake was moist & had an amazing caramelized crust , and the ice cream provided an amazing contrast in texture & temperature.

The resturaunt’s environment and atmosphere was really welcoming & great! Definitely a place in Ames you should check out.
