The Merry Monk offers one of the best and most affordable carveries around. At £24 for two on a Saturday, it’s excellent value. The selection of vegetables is usually good, and service tends to be efficient if you go earlier in the day.
However, on our latest visit, things were clearly stretched. We had a 2:15 pm booking on a busy Saturday, and the place was packed. After ordering drinks and two regular carveries, we were told to expect a 20-25-minute wait. In reality, it took closer to 45-50 minutes before we were called up.
When we got to the counter, a few items (like roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and sauces) had run out and needed restocking. Once everything was ready, though, the food was as delicious as ever, with the same high quality we’ve come to expect.
It seems the delays were simply due to how busy they were and the kitchen struggling to keep up. There’s a new kitchen extension being built, so hopefully this will help ease the pressure in future.
In summary: The Merry Monk remains a great, well-priced carvery, but just be prepared for longer waits during peak times. Go earlier in the day for the best experience.

We were welcomed into the restaurant and sat down to wait our turn to be called up to the carvery. 3 meats to choose from plus lots of yummy veg.

Simply the best roast I ever had. Everything is made with quality and love.
Literally everything on my plate was delicious. Special shout out to the honey glazed parsnips, layerd potatoes, cauli + broccoli cheese and the lovely tender beef.
Love the call out system that one table at a time gets called to the carvery and you will find your plates there ready for you, adding a civilised experience with no pressure to keep the queue moving so you end up with a delicious plate of your liking.
Just wish our waitress explained the system better as I was just looking for a plate to jump on the carvery and didn’t know there is a wait list

Just had a celebratory family meal for our Granddaughter’s 10th birthday. Lovely carvery as usual and very well organised but what made every thing extra special were the staff. Not only did they all go out of their way to wish her a happy birthday but when they bought the cake out for us, they all gathered round and sang happy birthday & joined in the applause.
It’s fantastic customer service like that which will guarantee we return time and time again.

Visited before Christmas and again today. The carvery must be the best in the west. And you do need to book it is very popular,everything fresh and beautifully presented. There is a great choice on the menu. But the carvery is 2nd to none.

Fantastic food and service from all staff. Our daughter is coeliac and they were great at explaining their gluten free options, their carvery selection was also very accommodating for GF options.
Would highly reccomend to anyone looking for a fantastic place to have lunch!

This is a great carvery with a huge selection of veg options, well cooked meat (Beef was served pink and very tender) and delicious roast potatoes. The only let down was not being offered more drinks, we asked for another after trying to get the attention of the waitress (it was busy) to be told they needed the table back. We thought we had a two hour booking so and had about 25 minutes left! We will return when in the area again, hopefully leaving less thirsty next time.
