I had the pleasure of staying in HBO for a couple of months and visited the meating place cafe more times than I’d like to admit.
The place is fantastic, from the food to the atmosphere, it’s a must visit spot. You need to take a trip down to the butcher as well, you know the cafe has good meat once you see it.
On the food, the Ruben is a classic and is probably their best (better than Katz in my opinion). Close second was the Cubano and I didn’t even think I liked mustard. French dip I also quite enjoyed.
The only two that were a slight let down were the turkey cranberry and turkey, bacon, avocado. I was hoping for roast turkey but it was a cold cut / deli style. Still a great sandwich but thought it was below their standard.
Special mention to the original breakfast burrito – probably the best breakfast burrito I’ve ever had. Also the coffee is great for being filter.
Overall, it’s hard to fault this cafe so thank you to everyone who makes it’s such a great place.

We arrived just after noon on a rainy Saturday in February. The front door slides open, that’s nice that it is hands free. As soon as we walked in, we were inundated with loud, headache inducing 80’s music. I love 80’s music, but it was very unpleasant. Once inside, you order at the counter and try to concentrate on what it is you would like (loud music makes it hard to focus). We were told the wait for food would be about 20 minutes and darn if it was just about 20 minutes when our number was called. We spent $40 on 2 sandwiches and 2 fountain drinks. You are given a number on your receipt and if you are dining in, you find your own seat. You also pour your own soda from the soda machine. When your number is called, you go and pick up your order at the counter. My sandwich (a BLTA) came with a pickle and a bag of kettle chips. The sandwich was good, there was a lot of thick cut bacon. I haven’t been here since they had a remodel, there is a lot more room now which is fantastic. I would say there are about 12 -15 tables inside. There is outside sitting too, with heaters. When you are done eating, you bus your own table. If you are unable to finish your food, there is a section at the counter that has foil and bags for your leftovers.

I ordered the elk burger and made it very clear to the cashier—twice—that I wanted my meat well done. The person confirmed my request both times. However, when I received my food and started eating, I realized the meat was not cooked well done at all. You can see the photos below as proof.
It’s disappointing to have my request ignored, especially after confirming it multiple times. As a result, I felt nauseous for the rest of the day and had a very poor experience overall.

Food was delicious. Big portions ! Plenty of parking was available . Only thing I was surprised by was there was no Biscuits and sausage gravy on the menu. Sandwich’s are delicious though.

I tried the chorizo burrito and the chicken bacon burger, both were delicious. The chorizo burrito was my favorite. I would recommend! Great breakfast

Best breakfast burritos in the state and maybe the country. I always get the Skillet Burrito that comes with sausage, hash browns and a great sauce plus delicious salsa on the side. You can definitely split it unless you’re very hungry or want to save half for later.

Defiantly not fast food. The sandwiches are good, but not 30+ minutes wait good. I wouldn’t call this a destination eatery, not something you would want to drive across town for, but if you’re in the area for sure, and if you are making a stop at the meat market which is highly recommended. The wait is a problem… normally I call in my order, but this time when I got there 20 minutes later and my sandwich still wasn’t made, somehow the order ticket just sat on the line, hopefully this won’t be a reoccurring theme.
My favorite sandwich here is the rueben, it is one of the best reubens you can get on this side of town. The house made pastrami is a stand out, and the rye bread they use is perfection matched with the saurkraut, swiss, and thousand island dressing. It has that east coast deli taste. My other go to and recommends are the french dip and philly cheese friday special, both have a yummy beefy flavor. However, the BBQ options are not my favorite, the BBQ pulled pork and BBQ brisket sandwiches just don’t cut it, I am not expecting texas que, or caroline pit here, but the smoke flavor is lacking, and the BBQ flavor mainly comes from the sauce.
The burgers are standouts here, they grind their own beef, the burgers are juicy and flavorful, and maybe be better choices than some of sandwiches.
If you’re in the area, and looking for a hearty lunch, and willingly to wait a bit, give it a try.

This review is for Katz Deli in NYC, not The Meating Place. The sandwich makers were very friendly and we enjoyed talking to ours while we waited for our meal. It was fairly busy while we were there but we were able to find a table easily. The sandwich was amazing but the bread didn’t hold up too well as it fell apart before we were able to finish it. Regardless of that I would definitely recommend this restaurant! We picked up a tee shirt on our was out!

Got Reuben and Roast Beef sandwich today. They were a little dry and bread was burnt. Hope they add more sauce next time.

This place is awesome! We ordered ahead and it was ready for us when we arrived. We added the chili onto our order when we got there and there was no delay. I’m not a chili person usually but this was delicious. We got the Cubano which came with chips and a pickle. Everything was incredibly flavorful, a definite do-over. My only critiques are that the music did not match the vibe (80s love ballads, meh) and the pickles have a tough exterior which don’t go well with the overall sandwich texture. But other than that I was impressed!
