Ashland finally has a legit cafe / breakfast spot! On the tracks, behind the Amtrak station and across from the beautiful Secretariat statue, The Market at Henry Clay Inn is bound to be a destination. The food is excellent and the atmosphere reeks of casual southern elegance. The cafe is open daily from 6 am and provides WiFi and multiple seating options.

The Inn is due for a major remodel this winter, which will make it even better. Bonus — because it’s a hotel, dogs are allowed in the cafe and the lobby lounge.

The blueberry scone was over the top suite. This is not a French bakery as one of the reviewers said. The French don’t use that much sugar. It’s more around texture and taste, not sugar. The ham and cheese croissant, small for $10, but the croissant was excellent. Flaky, overly greasy. Whatever cheese they used on it was really good. The key lime pie. The person that ate it said it was excellent, very creamy. I did taste it for the creaminess just about keeled over on the lime taste but it was definitely very creamy. The focaccia very light, but way way. Way too much salt on top.
The Italian rainbow cookies are exceedingly sweet and there’s a layer of martzipan in between. My eating partner. Enjoyed those immensely. Too sweet for me. I like sweets. But some things are over the top and pretty much everything here was over the top and sweetness and salt. And finally, the bread pudding said to be a toffee caramel sauce on top but tasted actually like heated up apple cider and sparse at that. Apparently they make their own ice cream. And while the flavor was good, the graininess left a bit to be desired. There appeared to be a drizzle of caramel on my ice cream so maybe that’s what they think. Maybe they should have put some on the bread pudding. The bread pudding itself was pretty bad. I eat creme brulee and bread pudding if they have it in whatever city or country I’m in. I consider myself to be somewhat of a conneseiur (I just can’t spell it) This was a cool, wet conglomeration with apple. All of this I figured would cost 30 – 32 bucks max. It was $45. !
The bathroom! It had an actual thick disposable large hand towel to dry your hands. They had scented hand soap, two different kinds of lotion. A basket full of sanitary items. This bathroom was 1000% better than the Jefferson hotel’s bathrooms.

Do yourself a favor and visit. The pastries here are fantastic. Not “good for a small town,” but genuinely excellent. There’s a formally trained pastry chef on staff and it shows, big time. The scones are perfectly crispy on the outside but tender and fluffy on the inside, and they are thoughtfully but subtly seasoned. The focaccia rivals any I’ve had anywhere, and I’ve had some incredible focaccia in my life. It helps that both times I’ve had it, the focaccia was still cooling on a rack, having been freshly baked that day. The lemon meringue tartlets are fabulous: the pastry crumb is flaky and firm without being tough, the filling is sweet without being cloying, and the meringue recalls the flavors of a campfire-toasted marshmallow. Oh, and I am so pleased to see Bart at the counter when I visit. I could go on and on, but the point is, you should try this place!!
