Whenever I would return to New England, I always tried to make a stop at Chef Wayne’s Big Mamou, where you could get some excellent food and excellent service.

I was saddened when Chef Wayne retired, but was excited to learn that he was helping to open a new restaurant, The Mamou. The new restaurant carries on his legacy of good food and good service, though in a more “gentrified” atmosphere from the cozy place on Liberty street.

Though thousands of miles from New Orleans, the creole cuisine served by the Mamou is top-notch. My favorite was the crawfish étouffée, though gumbo and jambalaya were quite good. If you’re hungry, a side dish of red beans and rice is a huge portion and very flavorful. The cute little cornbread muffin that comes with a dish is tasty, though I will fondly remember the generous bowl of cornbread squares you’d get at the Big Mamou.

Chef Wayne passed away recently. I hope he’d be proud that his recipes lived on with this new restaurant.

I came to The Mamou last Friday evening for the first time. I had heard about it for years. It was shockingly good. I knew tge previous owner died and was concerned it wouldn’t be as good but it was fantastic. Not a big menu but I got the crab stuffed catfish over rice with shrimp and lobster sauce. Not only was it perfectly seasoned and delicious, but the presentation was on point. It was more than enough food for me. Reasonable 27.00 for what you got. My only complaint was the long wait times to get your food. But the server was excellent, she was attentive and pleasant. I was able to park out front which was a few steps away from tge entrance. All in all it comes highly recommended. You won’t be disappointed.

First time trying this restaurant while on a short visit.

Atmosphere was great and matched the theme of the restaurant.

Was disappointed in the meal. Tried the monster burger. Presentation was good and on point but flavor failed. Took first bite and it seemed as the cook forgot the seasoning and spicy mayo. Literally no taste to give 5 stars. Asked the waitress for spicy mayo. She thought they may have put a llittle. I didnt see any. Either way would definitely not order this again.

Wanted to take the crawfish etoufeet go but didnt want to take the chance of paying more on the bill and being dissatisfied later when I ate it.

The service was terrific and prompt.

Hard to believe the Monster Burger didnt live up to its name.

This was my first time eating here. I just came across the restaurant bc I was craving Red Beans and Rice, Cajun Style. I’m so happy I chose to try it. Upon entry, I was greeted with a smile by Luna. She was also our server. She was very funny and friendly. She explained the menu, and answered all the questions we had. We ordered a little bit of almost everything, and while eating, still planned on what I was going to try next time we visited. Will definitely be back. The drinks were terrific! They have a full bar so they can make any drink you want that isn’t listed on the menu. The food was fresh, nice and hot, and so so tasty! The chef’s were accommodating to our allergies. Couldn’t even get to our desserts bc we were so full, but we took them to go! Will definitely be back for the Bananas Foster Pound Cake! Thank you all!

My Lunch Visit to Big Mama’s

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of checking out Big Mama’s new restaurant in downtown Worthington, and it was a really nice experience. I loved the ambiance cozy, stylish, and full of charm. The service was okay, but the food definitely stood out.

I ordered the Cajun pasta, which was packed with flavor and had a nice spicy kick. I also got the bourbon cheese bread rich, cheesy, and slightly sweet. We also shared some Cajun fries, which were crispy and perfectly seasoned.

Overall, Big Mama’s is a great spot for comfort food with a Southern twist. Definitely coming back, and I’d love an invite to the next media event.

We had a great mail, started off with appetizers of fried oysters and cheesy Cajun bread and crawfish balls they’re all delicious. We had the jambalaya for our main dish and I had the crawdad étouffée. We ended dinner with a Blantons bourbon and had chocolate pecan pie and bananas foster bread pudding. Everything was exceptional. The weight service staff was excellent, and the food was just as good.

The Mamou is supposed to commemorate Chef Wayne’s original Big Mamous Cajun creole restaurant. While the ambiance is welcoming, the food left you questioning, “where is the flavor and taste many of us grew to know and love?” The Mamou dishes were missing the “umph”. The calamari appetizer was pretty good with good crisp and spice, but the corn chowder soup, the Etoufee, and Cajun pasta all fell short of what it should have been. Maybe Chef Wayne can stop by and remind the cooks in the back of how to season the old Creole Cajun ‘Big’ Mamou way.

Just stopped in for my first Mamou experience with a quick to go order for lunch. Catherine pleasantly greeted me at the door and took my order. The restaurant looked amazing and would definitely come back to check out the nice bar. As for the food, I got the Cajun pasta and it was the best I’ve ever had. The chicken was seasoned great and the pasta sauce was to die for. It’s described as Spicy!!! on the menu but I think it was almost the perfect amount of hotness. More importantly it had flavor with the heat, a combination you find lacking at a lot of other places. The cornbread side was also incredible, moist and not dry. I was initially not impressed with the portion of chicken but the overall portion size made up for it and was extremely filling, I couldn’t stop eating it and finished it all.

Food is very inconsistent. The plate the food is served on. The way the food is prepared. The taste. I order the etouffee every time I come as I’m a creature of habit. Everytime I have it, it tastes significantly different. The first time I had the etouffee it was great and I’ve been chasing the high since. The Oysters Worthington, however, are incredible.
