We glanced at the menu, but we already knew what we were there for, the burgers. We started with two Old Fashioned, which were excellent, and an order of oysters. The oysters were fine fresh and simple though I personally prefer adding my own garnishes.
Now for the stars of the show the OG Burger and the French Smash. Both absolutely lived up to the hype and were incredibly delicious, but if I had to choose, the OG Burger was the clear winner.
We ended up having a couple more Old Fashioneds “for dessert” and enjoyed great conversation with the two bartenders, which really rounded out the experience. Between the welcoming service, great drinks, and unforgettable burgers, it was an all around fantastic night. Highly recommend, and we’ll definitely be back.
The good:
The Old Fashioned was great, the Banana Bread at Work drink was straight-up (whoever came up with this deserves a promotion), and the burger was delicious. Not life‑changing, but definitely top 5 — like the dependable friend who always shows up on time and never asks you to help them move.
The bad:
The mussels… smelled. Not “fresh ocean breeze,” but “the ocean is filing a complaint.” If you’re going to serve mussels, please introduce them to some acidity. Lemon, wine, vinegar — literally anything. Instead, The Loyalist said, “Let’s smother them in cream,” which only amplified the eau de low tide.
Then there was the special tortellini — or as I call it, pasta with a witness protection program identity. The filling was so minimal I’m not convinced it ever existed. I’ve had more flavor in a glass of water.
Attention to detail was stunning!
I made a reservation, saying we were celebrating our son’s engagement. They had a handmade card made up congratulating us! And some bubbly!
It was a dark and icy night, but it was well worth the trip.
Hubby loved the hamburger, it was his first time here. We will be going back for more!
I know the mussels here are incredible so next time, that’s mine!
Truthfully I wouldn’t say “you have to go!!!” But the burger was tasty!
Overall, my friends and I had a great experience! I posted a picture of one of the incredible hors d’oeuvres We shared.
Highly recommend starting off with the Gougeres and the anchovy toast. They also have a great tartare, your burger will come with fries but the dauphine potatoes are great to share with the table. We split their secret menu cheeseburger and I thought it was just okay, they make a special ketchup and it wasn’t for me. Will have to come back and try the French smashburger.
This is an iconic Chicago spot in a great area in west loop, this is definitely worth a stop in!
