THE LOCAL SEAFOOD AND OYSTER BAR
Review of The Local Seafood & Oyster Bar in Hot Springs, AR
Reviews
There was a bit of a wait with many open tables, but fortunately we were able to sit at the bar. Alexis our server was very friendly and attentive the whole time. We started out with the oysters and fried mushrooms with ranch. Both were fantastic! My husband got the fried catfish topped with a cajun seafood sauce (it started with an A but can’t remember the name). I got the cajun boil platter. Both were VERY good! The cajun boil platter definitely could have used more cajun seasoning, I tasted only a “hint” of it. The crab legs were probably some of the best we have ever had! Hardly needed the butter, they were so juicy and flavorful. We will definitely be back! Great seafood restaurant with a great location!
We enjoyed the atmosphere and the deck was comfortable.
We had the Cajun shrimp pasta that was our favorite very flavorful.
The 2 catfish 4 shrimp plate is a good sized serving and also really tasty. Shrimp is large size.
Didn’t picture it but We also had 2 “Boil” platers with 1lb shrimp & crab leg cluster. The boil good but definitely underwhelming, was served very simple with melted butter and a half of corn on the co. the shrimp was well cooked.
I think an option to add seasoning or a Cajun spice would be a good addition.
Overall We enjoyed our visit and would definitely be back.
I sat at the bar and was instantly greeted by Alexis. They have the usual suspects for beer selections on tap, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Kona Big Wave as well as Shiner Bock.
I ordered the Boudin Egg rolls and and 1/2 and 1/2. The egg rolls are a cheesy, gooey, and crispy blend of molten lava of tastiness.
The 1/2 and 1/2 snow crab and boiled shrimp, with potatoes and corn. I grew up in Florida, so I am SUPER picky about seafood. This rivaled some of my favorite seafood shacks, in a completely landlocked state, no less. The crab wasn’t freezer burned, the shrimp was cooked perfectly. My focus was the seafood, not the sides but I got a bite of a potato and the corn. The corn was fresh, the potatoes…. Meh. They were all overcooked and mushy.
The restaurant is bright and cheerful, not too kitschy, and had outdoor seating with a view of the lake.
I didn’t take photos on this trip other than the door but I plan to eat there again this evening. I’ll eat on the patio this time.
✏️ Edit
I went back on my final evening there and wow wat a difference two days make.
There was an hour+ wait. Fortunately for me, there was room at the bar, the same stool even. So I perched my happy self there.
I remembered to take photos this time!
Robin and Alexis were a blur as they moved
I ordered the 1/2 and 1/2 again but this time I added a boudin link. One of the cooks called out which did affect the quality and speed, but it was still delicious and delivered without a huge delay.
Also, the marina is where their overflow parking is, which is where I had to park.
75% to 95% of what is commonly perceived as “taste” is actually derived from the sense of smell.” With that in mind, if a restaurant cleans their tables with scented cleaner (ESPECIALLY if they spray it), then all of the food will taste like the scented cleaner. I don’t know how anyone in the food service industry doesn’t know this. Use unscented cleaner on the tables! The food here tasted fine, until a third of the way through the meal, when they cleaned a table 12 feet away. The cleaner wafted over to our table, and then every bite tasted like cleaner. Our meal was done. We couldn’t eat any more. Which is a shame, because the food tasted fine until our sinuses were assaulted by the spray cleaner.
The menu looks amazing. We may try eating there again, when we can eat outside. We did complain to the manager and gave it a few weeks to see if things improved. When we went back, you could smell the cleaner as soon as you walked in the door. We turned around and left. We love to support local businesses and getting to know the staff. I wish Local Seafood could be one of those, but, no.
There are plenty of GREAT restaurants in Hot Springs that know enough to use unscented cleaners. This isn’t one of them. If they ever change, I hope I find out about it, as there are so many things on the menu that I would love to try! If they ever go unscented, I look forward to changing this review to be more positive. Until then, Hot Springs is not lacking for great, local restaurants and chefs, there are so many other choices!
