I finally tried The Jerk Shack in San Antonio after seeing so many reviews, and let me tell you — the hype is REAL. I usually take online reviews with a grain of salt, so I started simple and ordered the pulled pork, while my daughter got the fried chicken.
When I say this food was GOOD… I mean OMG good. The pulled pork was delicious, and after tasting my daughter’s fried chicken, I literally had to go back and order my own — plus the cocoa bread! Everything was seasoned perfectly, cooked just right, and full of flavor.
All I can say is OMG. So, so good. I absolutely cannot wait to go back!
I had the half jerk, half fried chicken, and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. My sides were the masala fries and pineapple coleslaw. Both were delicious. My son had the chicken curry, which he said was very well seasoned, chicken was tender and the curry sauce was outstanding. All servings were very generous.
The atmosphere was really nice. Beautiful artwork displayed as well as the owners many accolades. It was also very clean.
We ordered: 2 meat meal which consisted both the jerk chicken and fried chicken. The two sides were the Mac n Cheese as well as the rice n peas. We also ordered the beef patties, jerk chicken empanadas and a jerk chicken plate with the fries and coco bread.
Being that we have had jerk chicken before we were expecting a smoke flavor to the chicken but surprisingly there was none. However the chicken skin was flavorful and the meat juicy and tender but the flavor was surface level. The fried chicken was underwhelming for it to be the best San Antonio has to offer. One, the pieces of the fried chicken were disproportionately smaller than the jerk and they were both thighs. As well as lack of seasoning. The Mac n cheese was not what I was expecting and no I was not expecting Thanksgiving Mac n cheese. But I’ve had Jamaican Mac n cheese and our Thanksgiving type and this was just a Miss. The rice and peas were dry. The beef patties were more mush than meat. The chicken empanadas with the accompanying sauce was good. The coco bread was good.
All and all I wouldn’t come back but I’m glad I popped in. This is my review so please do yourself a favor and try it and let your taste buds do the review.
