Kara, the bartender, was fantastic — friendly, attentive, and she pours a perfect pint.
The menu is simple and no-frills, which I actually loved. Just classic pub food done right. I ordered the Reuben sandwich, and it was excellent — thick corned beef, melted Swiss, sauerkraut, grilled rye, and very generous portions. The sweet potato fries were also great.
I paired it with a pint of Smithwick’s, which was the perfect match for the Reuben.
If you’re looking for an authentic Irish pub in Methuen with great food, big portions, good music, and friendly service, Irish Cottage is definitely worth the visit. I’ll absolutely be back.
We said hello first to the hostess who was just leaning back on the counter, but facing us. We thought we would be greeted with a smile and a warm hello but nope. It was awkward. We asked for a high chair as we had a toddler, and she responded with “ill see if we have one”. Okay, we’ll sat down at a very large table for just 2 adults and a child sitting on the edge. The table was FILTHY, as was the high chair. We had to use our baby wipes to clean it off but the menus, also dirty and sticky, kept sticking to the table.
Our waitress who never told us her name, took a while to greet us. She asked if we wanted drinks, we replied with just water. She then paused and asked what adult drinks we wanted. When we said none, she looked at us oddly. We do not drink but felt like it set the tone for our service.
We had to get her attention to order appetizers. We also ordered our son’s lunch. She never returned until we were basically done with appetizers. Our son got the wrong meal but we did not want to wait for the correct one.
By the time we ordered our late lunch, I mentioned we wanted to order a to go dinner too, so we didnt have to wait.. our toddler doesnt last long in places. She literally walked away. So that changed our minds about having dinner from here. She checked in with other tables behind us many times, as it seemed they were “regulars” and this being our first time dining here, she checked in only twice (aside from the 2 times she only took our orders). I flagged her down for boxes to pack up our food in, and order dessert to go (i checked their website before arriving). I asked if they were made in house and she said nothing was. Which made me think, when I asked for cheese on my burger other than american she said they only have american (yet many items on the menu have mozzarella, Swiss etc) does that mean many items were previously frozen?
All in all, food tasted fine. The Philly spring rolls were ok. Kind of bland with a greasy taste and the sauce was kind of displeasing. It tasted like a sweet Tabasco which I dont think compliments the rolls much.
The wings were crispy. We got a large half garlic parmesan half Asian chili. There was no blue cheese and I had to ask for it.
My son got tenders instead of nuggets. While this doesnt seem like a big deal, my son is autistic so it is a very big deal, because he will eat a nugget but not a tender. He enjoyed the fries, they seemed crispy outside and fluffy inside.
We got burgers for main courses. Mine was the Mac smash which is kind of like a big Mac, with onion rings instead of fries. I liked the onion rings. The burger was so so. The cheese was off putting as it looked like a plastic pre-sliced, slice of Kraft cheese from the grocery section, that doesnt melt well. It stuck to the inside of my teeth, so after 2 bites I stopped eating it.
The other burger was on the weekly specials but only half was eaten.
Lastly the dessert we got to go (which i dont have photos of) we better. One was the banana foster ice cream pie. It was melted a bit when I got home only 10 min drive, so I ate it and it was delicious. The other dessert I will eat later, the pumpkin cheesecake.
One other note, the bathroom, specifically the changing table, had food all over it, on the inside where a child lays.
Sadly, I dont think we would recommend this place for dine in as the atmosphere and service were terrible. Between the hostess and waitress nobody was warm or friendly. There was a opportunity to order 3 meals to go but we decided on another place because of the Service.
We brought a a guest there who is from Houston. She was impressed!
