Charging premium prices for very basic ingredients feels like a cash grab. Nothing about it felt special or elevated. I do not mind paying more for quality, but this was overpriced and disappointing. I would not go back.
We recently ordered six mini cups to try a variety — basically one scoop each — and were charged $32 for six scoops. That’s a pretty steep price tag for ice cream that, while good, isn’t exactly the best we’ve ever had. At that price point, you’d expect top-tier service, flexibility, and a lot more than 6 scoops.
What really left a bad taste (pun intended) was the tasting policy. We asked to try a few flavors before ordering, and were told we could only sample one flavor each. That resulted in us ordering a flavor (brown sugar butter) that ended up being totally inedible. Not being allowed to try more than one flavor before spending over $30 on ice cream just feels off — especially when the scoops are already that expensive.
Overall, the ice cream is enjoyable, but this place really needs to reevaluate both their pricing and their tasting policy. We want to love this place, but it makes it hard when the experience leaves you more annoyed than satisfied.
Unfortunately after this experience, I am not sure me and my girlfriend will be back. $32 for 6 scoops just seems ridiculous.
Because she likes calling out people’s OPINIONS (her preferred punctuation for that word), I’ll start with my opinions first.
1. The signs outside are ugly and cheap (and dishonest but we’ll get to that) and I’m pretty sure attaching them to a tree counts as vandalism.
2. The candy is WAY overpriced. Calling that opinion because I haven’t done the research on whether or not the rest of town is getting a 10x markup on bulk candy.
3. The ice cream is flavorless and overpriced which they address by adding too much sugar to cheap ingredients which they then mix in. Here again, the markup has to make your eyes water. You’d think she could afford better signage.
4. The staff are bored and poorly trained.
Now, the facts:
1. My son saw the cheap, ugly, faded sign for chocolate covered pickles and decided he must have one.
2. When deciding to pick up a treat for him, I confirmed that this was the place by the sign and went in.
3. I couldn’t find a price for the pickle so asked the bored staff members if this was the place. They gave each other a confused look, said yes, and wrung me up for the $10.39. If nothing else, their confidence in pricing is to be admired. The other person went into the back to get it (apparently it’s a frozen item?) and came back saying there weren’t any. This did not seem to be a surprise to either of them.
They asked if I wanted refund and when I asked why I wouldn’t, they said it’s the same price as two scoops which most people choose to do. Let’s stop for a minute right there. I went and looked up a term on Wikipedia just so we all know what the story is:
“Bait-and-switch is a form of fraud used in retail sales but also employed in other contexts. First, the merchant “baits” the customer by advertising a product or service at a low price; then when the customer goes to purchase the item, they discover that it is unavailable, and the merchant pressures them instead to purchase a similar but more expensive product (“switching”).”
So, this practice is fraud. Small scale fraud but still.
But, also, I get it. It’s $10. Get over it. And I probably would have except….
4. We went back in days later, hoping that this temporary pickle issue was resolved and I was overreacting and checked, yup, sign is still there. Nope, no pickle. This time, my wife and son did go in and get a small sunday that was an eye-watering $22. I tasted it and that was where my earlier opinion came from. Was my experience flavored by the experience up to that point? I have no doubt.
5. While eating this overpriced cup of cheap sugar and fat we read the reviews and I just got more and more irritated with the con these people are perpetrating and then have the gall to talk down to the people who have been suckered by them and step up to give feedback.
If I had any advice to give it would be that if you are going to sell overpriced ice cream and try to shame those that point it out, you might want to make sure that you and your staff are not regularly committing fraud.
I look forward to the dismissive and poorly written response from the owner.
