The karaage was one of the best we’ve ever had; it was crispy on the outside yet tender and juicy on the inside! Curry was seasoned very well but we found the consistency to be more runny than expected.
The spicy cucumber salad was light and refreshing on the palate. I do wish it had some more time to marinate in the sauce so the flavours penetrate.
My partner also loved their miso soup. Super warm and comforting especially on a cold day!
Service was very quick and efficient however I did expect it to be just a tad friendlier given the previous reviews.
Portion size was great – definitely won’t be leaving like a hungry sumo! Overall, a very hearty meal in a very quaint setting.
We ordered the curry dinner and the udon noodle soup, both with karaage.
The karaage is fried to perfection, crunchy on the outside and super tender on the inside. The udon soup is flavourful, without being overly salty. The curry was also the same. Both dishes taste of quintessential Japanese comfort food. The generous green onion on the udon soup provided the sweetness that udon soup needs, but is often missing in other restaurants. The curry has an abundant amount of vegetables, which seem to be cooked into the curry, juices and all, providing a plethora of flavours to the curry.
We also ordered the Drip Too Much Roll (we chuckled at the name). It appears to be something of their own creation. Despite the unconventional ingredients (crispy fried seaweed roll on top of another roll, then all topped with crunchy noodles) it is subtly delicious. The flavours of the rolls themselves are subtle, but when you pair it with a little bit of wasabi, the taste just dances in your mouth.
The place isn’t fancy, it feels like you stepped into a cozy home and the food tastes like the chefs wanted to share their own favorite dishes from childhood. The dishes may look plain, and you may not get Instagramable photos here, but it will make you feel like you’re home… If your home also have a bar 😉
Not a big varieties of recipe, although good enough for the sushi night, if you’re not looking for something fancy.
Staff is very friendly and warm welcoming, hospitality is 10/10
Ambience is Okish. Should give it a try if in or around Collingwood.
Everything is always fresh and service is always quick! If you are on your way to the ski hill, or just spending a day in Collingwoods downtown, I would recommend checking it out.
The quick service was a pleasant surprise. Our orders were taken promptly, and the food arrived surprisingly fast, without feeling rushed. It allowed us to savor our meal without any unnecessary delays.
What truly sets Hungry Sumo apart is its authentic take on sushi. The sushi here is a taste of Japan right in the heart of Collingwood. Every bite was bursting with the freshest ingredients, and the chefs’ skill in crafting each roll was evident. It felt like a culinary journey through Japan’s rich sushi traditions.
I highly recommend Hungry Sumo to any sushi enthusiast looking for a memorable dining experience. The combination of a great atmosphere, quick service, and authentic sushi makes it a must-visit restaurant in town!

The cucumber salad he suggested! I could have eaten 100 more.
The food was incredible and Roman was the most knowledgeable host I have ever met.
See you when I’m back!
