Review – 2026-02-18 – The Hopper Kitchen and Market
For our ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure today we decided to return to a restaurant that we visited back in September of 2024. That was prior to our writing of detailed reviews so we figured that we should head on back and check them out again.

We parked in the downtown parking garage and walked the half block to the restaurant, arriving a few minutes before they were scheduled to be open, expecting to have to wait outside in the chilly, single-digit temperature. We were pleasantly surprised to find the door unlocked and that they were already serving customers.

One interesting thing about all the downtown Helena restaurants is that they are located in vintage buildings which means that they are forced to fit into what is essentially a large rectangular room. Most of them have not ventured very far from their original layout. This restaurant may have been a general store, with its counter running lengthwise down one side of the room. The interesting part is seeing what they have done with their available space. At The Hopper the walls are colorfully decorated with works by local artists. The ceiling is slightly dropped to cover HVAC and plumbing, but it still retains its classic vintage look.

The background music was fairly soft and didn’t interfere with our conversation at all. I couldn’t tell what genre was on the playlist, but if I had to guess, it would be some form of country or folk music.

We placed our orders at the counter and sat down at our table. At this restaurant they deliver the food to the tables, and the sign at the trash can states that they also clear the tables for you.

Otto ordered the Caprese Burger, which consists of a Montana grass-finished beef patty with caramelized onions, fig balsamic glaze, and topped with a thick slice of mozzarella cheese, tomato, arugula, and house pesto aioli. All this deliciousness was piled high on a Grains of Montana Bakery brioche bun. It was served with a healthy pile of lightly seasoned fries, which Otto described as “Phenomenal.”

On the advice of the cheerful hostess behind the counter, I ordered the Reuben Sandwich with Tots. My sandwich included Montana Wagyu pastrami served on a grilled Sunflower Bakery caraway rye bread with melted havarti cheese, sauerkraut, and a house Russian dressing. I find it interesting that The Hopper sources their different breads and rolls from various local bakeries. The rye bread on my sandwich was nicely toasted and the pastrami was tender and yummy.

I have to agree with Otto about the potatoes. My lightly seasoned tots were exceptional, perfectly crispy without feeling greasy at all. Both meals included pickle spears which were also crunchy, fresh, and tasty.

The super friendly hostesses were more than happy to provide ketchup in little metal containers when we asked for it. Otto requested ketchup refills twice and I noticed that each refill cup was a little larger than the previous one.

I asked Otto if we should come back here more often than once every two years. I believe he’s on board with that idea. This is a popular lunch place for the folks who work downtown. The last time that we came we noticed that their ordering line extended all the way to the door by noon. Today I believe the customer count was reduced by the cold and snowy weather, although there was a steady stream of folks coming in while we ate.

The Hopper derives its name from Grasshopper Creek, which is where the gold was discovered here on Last Chance Gulch. This restaurant is without a doubt one of the best places to eat in Helena. The hostesses just seem like genuinely nice people. We’ll be coming back for more of their great hospitality and delicious cuisine.

Generous portions, bowl was very fresh and had great flavor. Only negative was the steak was extremely chewy – I hope they improve the quality or way they prepare their beef. Good selection of canned drinks and beers on tap.

I love this local restaurant. I’ve been here multiple times and the food is always delicious. I love the PB&J Thai Wings and the BLT. Both have such a great flavor combination. I love their fries and tots with their scratch made ranch. I’ve tried a few bowls, which contained the freshest ingredients and were beautifully made. The cheesesteak is a new favorite of mine. The combination of local meat, beer cheese from the brewery next door, and that Parm crusted bread from the local Grateful Bread Bakery is to die for. You can’t go wrong with any item on the menu here.

It used to be my favorite place but now it’s so disappointing! Recently every time I order there is less and less everything and the quality is not the same either. Yesterday I got Rueben sandwich and it looked and tasted horrible. Couldn’t even taste any sauerkraut or sauce cause it was barely anything. Last year sandwich was twice as a big and delicious. Same goes for Ribeye. Just skimping on everything!

Oooo the fries and tots are SO tasty and seasoned so well! I enjoyed the unique BLT – it’s not like any BLT I’ve ever had. The wings are very good and paired with fries could be a meal! My dinner guest enjoyed the Brazil bowl.

There is some outdoor seating but the indoors was nice too. Great art on the walls.

I got the “Brazil bowl” with no tomato, oh my god!!! It was so good! I was nervous when they set a big plate in front of me, but it’s absolutely the perfect amount of food, and not filling to the point of being miserable. The staff were all very kind, and I was really excited to see a large selection of non alcoholic drinks!! I was very impressed and will come back the next time I’m in town!

The Hopper is awesome! A thank you from the entirety of the Toyota of Helena staff for an amazing cheesesteak sandwich lunch! Great portions, amazing flavor and quality — The Hopper is a must-have if you’re in Helena! All of the ingredients seemed fresh and well prepared. Crisp and delightfully seasoned fries were a great side for the sandwich!

Thank you again for your generosity, and thank you for making a kickass meal!

Stopped by with a friend for a work meeting during the lunch hour and ordered the 12 piece Wings. I got the Korean and the Teriyaki flavored ones and they were really excellent. The portion was significant as well with very meaty wings. Not grissly whatsoever. The fries I got with my meal were seasoned wonderfully as well. I barely used any of my ranch cause they were so good by themselves! The service was also great. They came and cleared our table and were friendly and smiling the whole time. I also love the big selection of different types of cold drinks in the cooler. This place won’t disappoint you.

I enjoyed a simple lunch of buffalo wings and battered fries. As a chef myself, I can appreciate when everything is made and served with care. My food was ready quickly in under 10 minutes. The ample wings and fries were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The buttermilk ranch dip was also quite good as well as plentiful. At $13 for a filling delicious portion, The Hopper is one of the top dogs of the downtown scene in Helena. *****
