We went in last night with a large group – I started the night a bit skeptical (kind of forcing my mind to be open because people in the group were saying good things)! The restaurant was lively and the staff were friendly, throughout. As the food began to come out, I could feel myself converting into a Honeypaw fan…
The starters ordered and shared by the group were all very flavorful. The range of flavors was making me more and more intrigued with every new starter dish. When we got our “entrees”, I fully converted!!
The rare beef salad was one of the more intriguing dishes I’ve had in a while and reminded me of one of my favorite dishes from my favorite restaurant. The Khao Soi was also a great choice, the broth carried an amazing flavor through every bite – I want to try other things on the menu but I will have a hard time not ordering this again upon my next trip!
My one complaint was that the bar seemed to be two steps behind all night. I really enjoyed my first cocktail (it took forever to get to me but was delicious) and I wanted to try a second one…. Sadly the second one that I ordered never arrived.
I ordered the crispy salad and it was so good that I came back the very next day and ordered the exact same thing again – that alone says everything. The cocktails are an absolute must-try: the menu is enormous, creative, and every drink we had was outstanding.
And then there’s the fried bread. Oh. My. God. The fried bread was so, so, so unbelievably good that I would go back just for that. Honestly, I would move to Portland just to eat that fried bread again.
They also have two modern ice cream options that are definitely worth saving room for. Overall, an incredible experience and easily one of the most memorable meals I’ve had. A must-visit.
We sat down at around 2:50pm on a Friday. The happy hour runs from 3-5pm M-F although the servers can’t input orders off the happy hour menu until 3:00pm, you may order prior to then and wait for them to be input.
The happy hour choices are quite reasonable price wise, and each dish was delicious. I would love to go back and eat dinner off the regular menu.
Note that this restaurant has a lot of counter-style seating which isn’t my favorite, and the outdoor tables are quite small. Not the most baby friendly establishment but most restaurants in Portland aren’t.
Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite meet expectations. The presentation and plating were top-notch, but the flavors fell short. We were especially excited to try the lobster toast, but the meat was so mushy that we couldn’t even tell if it was lobster or something else. That said, others in our group enjoyed their noodle dish. We’ll likely give this spot another try on our next visit, hoping for a better experience.
However the restaurant itself is quite small but perfect for a downtown stroll with 1-2 people. If you have bigger party 3-5, I suggest you call ahead of time. Street park or gararge. If you’re lucky, you might find a spot next to the restaurant.
The two people working there were both Great to deal with. No rush, but attentive. Food came out at a really nice pace as we had ordered a bunch of different items and told them we were gonna be splitting.
Each dish came out perfectly done, no delay from kitchen to table, plated on hot plates.
We had three really nice plates from an appetizer to a salad to a noodle dish. Each was wonderfully prepared. Flavors spices and ingredients were balanced really well.
In a city that has so many options, I don’t think you will do anywhere that will more easy-going and delicious as this.
On a sidenote,. The restroom was incredibly well appointed. It was well attended/clean and even had a touch of fresh flowers in the corner.
I worked in the restaurant business for years.
If the restroom has that much attention, give it to it then the kitchen/back of the house will be the same or better.
Came here for brunch on a Sunday afternoon. Compared to other popular spots on the same street, this one was relatively less crowded, so we were able to get seats at the communal table. We were expecting Asian fusion dishes, but their menu was more like seafood-forward Southeast Asian. Solid overall, but nothing mindblowingly good.
Lobster Toast – A Vietnamese-inspired lobster sandwich served with lettuce cups, radish, basil, and chili fish sauce for DIY wrapping. Conceptually interesting, but the lobster and scallop mousse was too mild. Once wrapped with all the herbs and veggies, it tasted more like a generic spring roll. Honestly preferred it unwrapped, just the toast with a light drizzle of sauce.
Mee Goreng – Crab sambal and smoked crab gave off strong jjajangmyeon (Korean black bean noodle) vibes. Slightly less sweet, with more spice and a nice seafood umami from the crab and (maybe) a touch of shrimp paste.
Khao Soi – A nice bowl. The broth was a bit milder than usual, but otherwise, it didn’t feel all that different from what you’d get at a solid Thai restaurant.
As everyone has stated, the honeycomb ice cream is crazy! We were all shocked at the first bite. The flavor is an incredibly intense meld of salted caramel and honey. The texture is a bit melted/soupy, but it did not matter. It was perfection. The honeycomb and dark chocolate were also great. I would come back just for this. We got 3 ice creams for 5 people due to the rave reviews — this was slightly too much, and we probably would’ve been fine with 2. It is very sweet, so I would be able to eat half at most.
Other things we liked: The bluefin tuna tostada special was delicious! The Mee goreng was a bit sweet for me, but the rest of my family loved the wok charred noodles and vegetables, and the ample amount of lump crab. The lobster tom yum had really tender lobster and big juicy mussels. This was a good dish if you like tom yum/sour soup (I don’t, but I still liked it).
The chicken wings were also really intensely flavored, and unlike any wing flavoring I’ve had before. A bit sweet for me, but I’m glad I tried them! The lobster toast was pretty good but not a must-get. I didn’t like the mazemen — the seasoning was just sour and creamy. I also didn’t like the Hot Goss mocktail — extremely sour.
Overall, The Honey Paw definitely delivers on unique Asian fusion seafood dishes that you can’t get elsewhere. And you have to try the ice cream!
