My boyfriend took me on a surprise date here and I was absolutely in love with the experience. They had wonderful tea selections, sandwiches and desserts were delightful, even the staff was friendly and attentive. Overall great experience and would recommend. Especially if you’re looking to do something special but cozy in the winter. Thank you Hidden Oak Cafe!!

Great afternoon tea experience on a chilly day overlooking snowy grounds of the estate. This was our 1st tea- adult mom & adult daughter celebrating fall birthdays. The hospitality & service reminded us of being on a cruise, very attentive & informative.
We shared a crafted salad that our server assisted with designing before the start of tea service. So good! Yummy across the board.
Mom adds, “ In my 85 years, this was one of my top dining experiences, delightful, delicious & relaxing!”

We had a fantastic lunch at the Hidden Oak Cafe.
They offer an excellent assortment of wraps, sandwiches, soups and Salads. They have an incredible assortment of teas.
Nice ambiance with beautiful park-like views, this is a worthwhile stop when visiting the arboretum.

Great time at the cafe. Sat outside, a little chilly deep under the awning and not the most amazing view than the direct balcony areas but still very nice. Great break space between hiking around. The quiche and scones were great, scone could be split between two even since it was quite large.

They have a Victorian Tea at the Cafe. We made a reservation for a Saturday afternoon a day before. The Victorian Tea was $42.95 a person plus tax and automatic 20% tip so for 2 people, the bill was $110.49. Each person gets a tea pot. The scone and pistachio cake were good. The decor in the tea room was nice though. We came in a relatively hot day and they had fans out since there was no AC.

The food was absolutely incredible—everything from the delicate pastries to the rich, authentic clotted cream and flavorful preserves was top-notch. I especially recommend the caramel tea; it’s sweet, soothing, and the perfect complement to the experience.

However, I’m giving four stars instead of five due to the service, which didn’t quite meet the standard I expect from a proper tea service. When we asked for cream, our server scoffed and insisted the tea didn’t need it. Once it was finally brought, we weren’t checked on again—no refills, no offer of more tea or water, and it took nearly eight minutes after we’d clearly finished before anyone cleared our table.

Still, the quality of the food and tea makes this place worth visiting—I just hope the service improves.

Hidden Oak Café

Having visited this charming café multiple times over the past two years, I’ve watched it maintain its unique character while experiencing some changes in quality. This review blends experiences from recent visits, offering a comprehensive look at what you can expect.

Food: 3.5/5
The café shows both consistency and variation in its offerings. The egg salad sandwich remains a reliable choice – generously portioned, properly chilled, and enhanced with fresh sprouts. Recent soup offerings were mixed: the tomato soup impressed with excellent flavor, while the butternut squash soup disappointed, arriving too cool and missing advertised ingredients. All meals come with appropriate sides (chips with sandwiches). The food quality has slightly declined from earlier visits, but still maintains decent standards. No digestion issues.

Service: 3/5
Service has remained consistently average over the years. While staff maintains a pleasant demeanor, attentiveness varies significantly between visits. Some hostesses provide better service than others, but overall, the service neither impresses nor disappoints. Response times are generally acceptable.

Ambiance: 5/5
The café’s strongest asset continues to be its enchanting setting within Bayard Cutting Arboretum. The “hidden” aspect adds genuine charm, with stunning park and water views through large windows. The interior maintains its quaint, country feel, and the covered porch offers delightful outdoor seating in favorable weather. Note: Cell service remains spotty with no WiFi available.

Cleanliness: 4/5
The establishment consistently maintains clean, well-kept spaces throughout, a standard that hasn’t changed over time.

Parking/Accessibility: 4/5
Parking situation remains unchanged – paid lot (free with state park pass) with a scenic walk to the café. The walk continues to be part of the experience rather than an inconvenience.

Value: 4.5/5
Prices have increased slightly over two years (from $29 to $21 for a lighter lunch for two), but still represent excellent value given the unique setting and portion sizes. The value proposition remains strong, especially considering the park location.

Overall: 4/5
Hidden Oak Café continues to charm with its unique setting and peaceful atmosphere. While food quality has shown some inconsistency recently, it remains a worthwhile destination, especially when combined with a park visit. Not open for breakfast, but perfect for a lunch excursion. Best approached as part of a larger arboretum experience – come for the nature, stay for a pleasant lunch in a truly unique setting. The combination of reasonable prices, charming atmosphere, and park location maintains its appeal for both locals and tourists exploring Long Island.

A nice spot for tea and/or a meal in the Manor House at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. Seating available indoors and out. Friendly service and relaxed atmosphere. Some standard and reasonably-priced food options, great assortment of tea and baked goods; slices of crumb and Kahlua cakes were both delicious!

I’m so glad we were able to get lunch at the Cafe during our trip to the arboretum. It’s not glamorous. The food was tasty and the service was excellent. If you can, I recommend eating on the porch, with the lovely views. There’s a lot of hustle and bustle, and the dining area is small and next to the to go counter.

A wonderful little cafe with gorgeous views and a good selection of food. I’ve only been to the arboretum, but I was pleasantly surprised the first time I tried the cafe. Baked goods, sandwiches, soups, salad, teas and coffees. The salad was delicious and fresh, the soup was also very good. I got a large portion, the price was fair. I would definitely return to this establishment. Beautiful scenery!!
