I used to get lunch here every once in a while when I worked in the area. Their portions are hearty for like $15. Banana and water with it too. Very tasty rice and pasta.
Their sambusas are a quick, delicious and filling option. Don’t miss out on their $3 smoothies if you see some in the fridge. My favorite was mango but strawberry is pretty good too.

I was in Lewiston for an appointment today and wanted something different than the norm for a tasty lunch. Googling, I found The Heritage Restaurant. I easily found parking right out front, and went in and asked for recommendations from the menu. The service I received was friendly and helpful. The atomsphere is nothing to write home about, but I was just there for a tasty meal (and got it to go). The food…oh my word, absolutely delicious! I will be back when I’m in the area.

Some of the best food in town! Traditional Somali dishes cooked with love and shared in community.

A vibrant immigrant community is really making a go of a town that was spiraling. Everyone owes themselves a chance to taste this cuisine. Hearty and basic. A little spicy by bland American standards, but nothing that would surprise you if you eat Tex-Mex from time to time. And not at all expensive.

My kiddos and I got lunch here as a way to peak into Lewiston’s Somali community on the way through. The decor is a little fancier than you’d expect for a place serving homestyle meals. The appetizers were yummy, especially the crepes, which are a little sweeter than the French version. We also got samosas, which were good but not as good as I’ve had in a Somali-American kitchen. Similarly, the ugali and beef dish was underwhelming. The ugali was pretty dry. (My kids called it mashed potatoes and gobbled it up, though).

If I went again, I’d get the goat & spaghetti, because that seemed like the most popular option among the Somali patrons, and likewise I’d get a mango smoothie.

Paradoxically, they did a fantastic job with the American food I ordered for the kids – grilled chicken and french fries, which was on a big sign in the window but not on the menu. The chicken was just perfect – flavorful and juicy. The fries were clearly hand-cut and came out steaming hot from the deep fryer.

Go here to get a glimpse into one of Maine’s interesting subcultures!
