A Vashon Island Gem: Exceptional Flavors and Hospitality
Following a quick work trip to the island, we popped into The Hardware Store Restaurant and were met with an absolutely delightful experience. While there was a brief wait before being greeted, the service, atmosphere, and quality of the meal from that point forward were top-tier.
The kitchen truly shines when it comes to seasoning and technique. We ordered the Mushroom Risotto special, which was easily one of the best I have ever had. Often, risotto can be bland, but this dish was perfectly flavored and achieved that ideal “gooey” consistency without needing a touch of extra salt. We also tried the Chicken Marsala; the cutlet was perfectly crunchy, the homemade spaghetti was served al dente, and the sauce was a genuine treat for the tastebuds.
A highlight of the visit was the unexpected hospitality. Though we had originally declined adding salmon to the risotto, the chef accidentally prepared it. Our server graciously offered it to us free of charge. Despite being very picky about fish, I found the salmon to be delicious, featuring a perfect blackened, crispy skin and incredibly flaky, flavorful meat.
The service throughout the meal felt like catching up with a best friend—warm, welcoming, and making us feel right at home among the locals. Between the cozy historic atmosphere and the impeccable food, I will definitely be back. In fact, I would consider making the trip to Vashon specifically just to dine here again.
Rosie was our server and she was awesome—super friendly and on top of everything. Even got to say hi to the chef, which was a nice touch.
If you haven’t been in a while, go now. We’ll definitely be back soon.
I wanted to love it. We stood at the front for about 10 minutes without being acknowledged. During that time a male server walked by, made direct eye contact with me, then turned away and kept walking without saying anything. Several people came in behind us and eventually left because no one greeted them. A quick “Hi, we’ll be right with you” is a low bar to meet that makes all the difference.
While we were standing there it was already obvious the dining room was backed up. Multiple tables were sitting covered in dirty plates and glasses, not even pre-bussed. Once we were seated, those same tables stayed dirty around us until we were nearly finished eating. The staff working seemed totally nice but clearly overwhelmed. My partner ordered a beverage and the server brought the wrong one. He did get the right one, but thought his lack of familiarity with menu options was odd.
Meanwhile the manager was standing at the expo line plating food while facing the dining room the entire time. From there he could see guests waiting to be greeted and tables piling up, but the floor wasn’t being run.
The food was fine. But a black bean burger, a bowl of clam chowder, and two kids’ grilled cheeses with no alcohol somehow came out to over $100. The experience was not worth it, unfortunately.
The place is cute and has potential. It just needs someone actively managing the dining room. You are leaving money on the table in more ways than one by understaffing.
The restaurant has a cozy, charming vibe with a unique atmosphere, blending the feel of a historic space with a modern touch. Service was friendly and quick, making it perfect for a casual morning meal. Would definitely stop by again next time we’re on the island!
Service was friendly and attentive, even though the place was clearly busy. The only small note is that the staff seemed a bit stretched for how busy it was; still, they delivered a great experience. I will absolutely be back.
