We recently visited The Grove on LaVista Road, and overall, I’d rate the experience 3 out of 5 stars.
The atmosphere of the restaurant definitely fits the tavern style — it’s cozy but also quite dark. Honestly, it was so dim that it was difficult to even see my food clearly, and a little more lighting would really improve the dining experience.
On the positive side, the wait staff was excellent. They were prompt, attentive, and got our orders out very quickly. The buffalo shrimp and Asian spring rolls were both delicious and well-executed — probably the highlight of the meal.
Unfortunately, the main courses were disappointing. I ordered the grouper sandwich, but the fish served was clearly not grouper. As a native Floridian with 59 years of eating grouper, I can confidently say this was not it. The texture was dense, the flavor flat, and the color was greyish — it resembled a freshwater fish like trout much more than any grouper I’ve ever had. I didn’t want to cause a scene about it, but it was definitely a letdown.
My wife ordered the crab cakes, and while they were cooked well, they were extremely bland. The coleslaw was good, and the sauces served with the dishes were flavorful, but overall, the main food lacked seasoning and depth.
I’ve even attached pictures of the “grouper” for anyone curious — it speaks for itself.
Final thoughts:
While there are some strong points (great staff, good appetizers, tasty sauces), the overall lack of seasoning and the issue with fish mislabeling would make it hard for me to recommend a return visit. There’s potential here, but for now, it’s not a place I would choose again.
I don’t come often but when I do it’s always a Great Experience!!
Today I ate Shrimp n Grits, absolutely delicious and the andouille sausage was bringing on the heat. Excellent dish. Burgers here are amazing, the sweet potato fries are Great!
Service is as always Great as well! Recommend 100%
Bon Appetite
The food quality is at about a 75 grade. Onion rings way overcooked. The fish in the fish and chips was just OK. The Asian Spring rolls nothing about to write home
Loved the tequila recommendation from the waitress, thank you. From a female owned tequila brand. Best part of the meal.
The dessert was allegedly a chocolate cake, but it was more of an ice cream with a little bit of cake.
I will return to The Grove just to be enchanted by the wonderful server!
The restroom was clean and well lit. Parking was pretty decent.
