The Garden Restaurant at Temple Square — Where Zion Meets Zesty

If you’ve ever wondered what it would taste like to eat celestial glory, the new Garden Restaurant at Temple Square is probably it. Located just steps away from where pioneers once hand-pulled wagons, you can now hand-pull apart Lion House Rolls — still so soft they could convert even the most skeptical carb-avoider.

Let’s start with the cinnamon roll, which, by Church standards, could feed a large family and a few home teachers. It’s enormous — like “Moses parting the frosting” levels of amazing. Bring your ministering companion to help you finish it.

The Soup of the Day? Inspired. It tasted like it was crafted by Relief Society sisters who prayed over the pot. The sandwiches come with chips — because apparently even in Zion we can’t escape that “Café Rio combo” energy — but they’re hearty, fresh, and genuinely delicious.

Don’t skip the salads — big enough to share unless you’ve fasted for two meals, in which case it’s personal revelation whether to order two.

Now the apple pie — bless it — is the perfect size for one person, proving that the Garden understands that some temptations should not be shared.

The environment feels like the Celestial Room of restaurants: elegant, and perfect whether you’re sealing a business deal, gathering the family, or sneaking in between conference sessions.

Overall:
Heavenly food.
Righteous portions.
Lion House Rolls that could start a revival.
Great for business meetings or post-temple dinners.

In short, five stars, or as we call it in Utah, five loaves and two fishes.

The Garden Restaurant is a quick serve eating option in Temple Square. I thought the food was very average but the people in my group really enjoyed it. You order your meal at the counter and then you grab it when it’s ready. There are cinnamon roll looked really good.

This place was amazing in every way! I haven’t had food this good in years. We shared a jalapeno pork sandwich and a berry and nut salad and they were heavenly! Cute casual atmosphere and great service with an interesting way of ordering.

Honestly I loved the food. The difficulty I had was with the service. I ordered a salad, a bowl of tomato soup, and a roll. When I picked it up there was no roll. I asked for it and a female staffer frustratingly questioned why I was asking for one. The gentleman looked in my back and corrected the roll issue.

When I finally sat down to eat a delicious tomato basil, to my chagrin the soup was not tomato, but bacon potatoes.

I figured I’d just let that slide and started eating the soup. There I found a thick long hair wrapped around a piece of potato and that’s when I had enough. I called several times following the circuitous automated phone lines and was not connected to any one. I walked downstairs to speak with their main offices, lower level JSMB, and there was no one present and no way to get their attention to get help.

I love the restaurants here. The food tastes great! The service however was very much lacking , seemingly from top to bottom, and I don’t know if I’ll be eating there again any time soon (even though I work less than a block away.)

The atmosphere, decor, view, location, and food are strong 5’s. The service however, at least today, was not. Please address the issues so future folks will enjoy your incredible offerings.

If it was more affordable I would have given it 5 stars. I moved to The Valley from Georgia in 2021, and have been looking forward to trying the famous Lion House rolls ever since; I wasn’t disappointed, but I don’t know if they’re worth the $1.69 per roll vs buying a bag of frozen Rhode’s Bake and Serve rolls and baking them. Although the butter served with them should be at least room temperature; it was so cold it barely melted inside the hot roll. My entree was the Turkey Pot pie which $13 for a pot pie about the same size as the larger Marie Calendar’s single serving pot pies is a bit steep. It did taste good though; with my only criticism being that the gravy was more like soup than gravy. Considering the other alternatives though I would rather eat here than at the food court in City Creek, and you won’t really be saving much money going to the McDonald’s in the food court anyway. If the pot pie was about $3 cheaper, and the rolls $1 each this restaurant would have gotten a solid 5 star rating from me. As for the staff I can’t stress enough how polite, and friendly they are. I can’t even remember the last time I ate somewhere that the staff were so nice. Not even Chick-Fil-A who is known for their quality of service has ever been so friendly, or had as good a customer service, and that’s coming from someone who came from their home state.

Their Turkey Pot Pie is my all time favorite! The crust is flaky and buttery and the filling is exactly that—filling! I never come away hungry when I have their pot pie.

Their soups are good, comes with a delicious roll. My favorite soup is Loaded Potato, then their Cauliflower, then their Clam Chowder.

Their sandwiches were delicious, but a few months ago when they reopened after the pandemic shutdown, their recipes changed. Their prices also went up. I don’t get a sandwich anymore unless they are out of my first two faves.

The staff are very kind and helpful.

After a couple long years, I was excited to finally get eat another jalapeño pork sandwich. It was really good!! It was sweet and mildly spicy with the pineapple and jalapeño -a perfect combo! Comes with chips too.

I also ordered the cheddar broccoli soup and it was amazing. Very creamy and cheesy. I dipped my chips in it.

I’m excited to have the Garden (formerly Nauvoo cafe) back!

Oh and the new design and layout is really good! It’s fancy and effectively designed.

The food has always been great, especially the Lion House Rolls. Beware if you are ordering online for pickup. I ordered 2doz rolls through their website,3 days in advance, paid, received confirmation. Showed up to pickup…”We dont have enough to fill your order”??? Obviously, whomever is responsible for making sure those online services work properly needs to recheck those details.
Still waiting on a refund, BTW

I always enjoy my time at this restaurant. The atmosphere is so bright and airy, with beautiful views. The tables are trendy and look very clean. Our most recent visit my husband and I got the spinach artichoke dip, the pork dish as well as the pasta dish, along with some specialty lemonades. So delicious! Our server Jason was so helpful with the menu and gave great details about each dish we had questions about. When our dishes came, they were beautifully presented, and tasted wonderful! We are excited to plan another trip to The Garden soon!
