Decided to treat myself out and I absolutely enjoyed my time. The sushi and egg rolls were delicious and fresh! The waitress was very kind and owner (I’m assuming) was so sweet & personal. I definitely will be coming back soon!

It cannot be understated how amazing this ingenious little charming location is and promises to continue to be. Gaijin is an Asian-fusion restaurant with a revolving menu that, despite its nascency (opening very recently as of 2025!), offers incredibly bold flavors, irrefutable high-quality food, and a love of the craft that will leave anyone with an indelible appreciation similar to that which the owner and chef, Remy, has for Japan.
The ambience was incredible, the serving size helpings were more than generous, and the smell wafting from the kitchen during meal prep was remarkable. It’s a very low-key vibe, with the decorations unostentatious and very down-to-Earth making all feel welcome. We ordered the tonkatsu ramen with an egg on top (charmingly sunny-side up) and the teriyaki beef prime rib with white rice – and honestly, I shamelessly licked the last remnants of every bite from my teeth. The broth was warm and delectable, the meat was tender, the rice was fresh tasting and a terrific palette cleanser in between rich vegetables. Where was this chef during my childhood? He made VEGGIES flavorful and filling.
I take no amount of shame in admitting I could not help myself but praise the food and experience throughout the night. And if you would like to learn exactly why, I cannot recommend enough coming out to Hazel Park and falling in love with the place as instantly as my husband and I both did. You will not be disappointed, and will leave envisioning plans for the next trip!

Truly showstopping food, I wish I could learn the secret to how it’s so good! I keep coming back for more. Prices are not too bad and you get a free appetizer if you buy a drink too. Lovely atmosphere and very cozy, great local spot. Service can be a bit slow because there is only 1 staff member, but very friendly and welcoming.

Went in last night and the reviews were legit! I’m always looking for unique and passion-driven dining experiences, and The Gajin left me impressed. The owner/chef Remy was a pleasure and does an excellent job in the kitchen. He is not serving the trendy commercial asian-inspired food of today, but an authentic culinary experience that’s charming to the pallet!

I really wanted to like this place because the owner was genuinely kind and seemed open to feedback, which I appreciate in a recently opened, small restaurant.
Unfortunately, the overall experience didn’t live up to expectations the night I visited.
The ramen itself was disappointing and mid. The noodles were too soft/mushy/soggy and lacked the springy texture. The vegetables seemed poorly handled as well. The napa cabbage in particular was inconsistent—some pieces were mushy while others felt almost raw. The chashu was tough and didn’t have the rich, fatty flavor and “melt-in-your-mouth” tenderness that normally complements the dish. The broth felt very watery and dilute—more like a light bone broth rather than the hearty, creamy, umami-rich tonkotsu style many people look for (if you prefer a mild broth, your mileage may vary).
During my visit, the air inside the restaurant had a noticeably rancid, stagnant oil smell that made your eyes sting. The restroom was also not very clean.
Overall, the experience felt a bit haphazard and didn’t reflect a strong Japanese ramen preparation. That said, the owner’s kindness and willingness to improve stood out, and I do hope the restaurant continues refining its food and operations.

A very casual ramen + sushi spot owned & operated by such a kind, sweet gentleman! Solid regulars to chat with over affordable comfort food at a relaxed pace. Karaoke, often 80s theme, is usually always going after a certain time of night, so you know it’s legit (though late eve may not be for the easily over-stimulated). The Owner Remy shows respect to vegan clientele by really trying to supply well for plant-based fare, it means SO much; we’re not just an afterthought and for that we’ll be here often. No bullying tolerated here! LGBTQ+ and ALL are welcome. Remy is down-to-earth with a genuine passion for the food, people, and culture that is contagious for anyone else who truly looks for the spice of life. The fresh veggie roll, crispy golden furikake potatoes in dragon sauce, savory agedashi tofu, and perfectly arranged yakiudon + vegan shrimp are my main choices. Always down to try whatever new stuff he wants to whip up, love the creativity. BYOB! Zip across 9 Mile to come sing with Chef Remy and see what the fuss is about <3

Personally I used to work at a very high end sushi spot and I’d say the concept behind some of the ingredients like the wasabi vinaigrette really surprised me. Not spicy at all, to say the least, very lucious, fruity, acidic was a very good pair as a dipping sauce with his potatoes. Will be going back probably weekly. You can’t beat his prices and hospitality. Very easy going guy Remy the owner was traditionally trained in Japan and knows what he’s doing. Great job I hope you the best success. If you’re a local you’ll love this spot. Healthy and delicious.

Reninisance Studio
Gaijin is an amazing local ramen and sushi restaurant. My brother and I went here and we have been trying to go back ever since. Food was freshly cooked, broth was light and savory, and the atmosphere was fabulous. I also need that recipe for the chili oil! The owner(s) should be proud for real.
One thing that could be improved:
Please update the times on Google Maps or have hours posted on the restaurant. It gets a little confusing knowing when to come or not. Maybe a neon sign to match the vibe or a hanging one to go outside?
