Delicious. Delicious. Delicious.

Bakeries like these are so rare and I’m so happy I found this hidden gem! There’s something in here for everyone. Highly recommend the donut and vanilla slice! I will absolutely be coming back for more, amazing and brilliant store!

Hudson and the team at The French Lettuce are truly exceptional. They created the most magnificent croquembouche for our wedding, a cake I had dreamed about for years, and seeing it brought to life so beautifully was incredibly special.

From our very first conversation, Hudson was warm, generous with his time, and clearly passionate about his craft. The tasting was such a joy. Every flavour was thoughtful and beautifully balanced, which made choosing surprisingly difficult. We eventually settled on a classic pairing of vanilla and coffee, and it was perfect.

On the day, the croquembouche was a stunning centrepiece. The golden toffee caught the light and gave it such elegance, while the choux pastry was feather light and filled with silky, delicately flavoured cream. The toffee had the perfect crisp snap without being overly sweet, and every bite felt refined and indulgent.

It was not only beautiful but genuinely delicious. Our guests are still talking about it.

Choosing The French Lettuce was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding, and we are so grateful for the care and artistry that went into creating something so memorable. Thank you!

I got the chocolate Chantilly cake for my son’s birthday. It was nice and moist even after 2 days. The only thing I would change is to have more of sponge cake in it than the chantilly as you couldn’t taste the cake very much. Overall was good and it’s quite reasonably priced imho. You can get 10 generous portions easily from a 18” which I think was their smallest.
I also collected from the Bulleen patisserie which they supply to, so it was handy for me to

Shocking lack of strawberries in the “Charlotte Meringue” cake we purchased for my son’s first birthday!

Very very disappointing, not something you pick up on until you cut into the cake and realise there is probably 1 or at most 2 actual strawberries used in a whole 3-layer 8-inch cake. Completely ruins the ratio in this sort of a cake as well, nothing to break up the heavy sections of sugary custard.

Not sure if this is normal or not, if it is, then I can safely say this is the worst cake we have purchased at that price point; and if it isn’t, then there is a serious serious lack of quality control at this patisserie.

Beside that, the ladies at the actual shop were polite & great, so thank you for that at least!

When I walked in the lady was on phone, she didn’t acknowledge or tried to pause the call. I waited probably 3 minutes for her to finish the call.
I got the vanilla slice and a chocolate croissant. Vanilla slice is definitely not the best, if not the one I least like. The pastry is very thin almost non existent, while the filling is very greasy, something supposed to be light and fluffy is made buttery and rather on the heavy side.
The chocolate croissant has a thick layer of chocolate on top but it’s overly sweet without the chocolate aroma, tastes like very cheap chocolate from a 2 dollar shop. The croissant pastry itself is alright, definitely not one of the good ones in Melbourne.
Everyone’s taste is different, this is just not to my liking. Won’t buy again.

Everything which you buy from The French Lettuce will be delicious and you can place an order online, if you wish. The people who work there couldn’t be more helpful. The lemon tart is my favourite, but they are famous for their vanilla slice.

Been here several times. Come for the fresh and delicious danish pastry and their signature vanilla slice. Coffee is smooth and very consistent with every visit. They have an array of cakes, donuts, pastries and hot food. There are stools inside and outdoor tables also. Highly recommend.

I bought two pieces of the vanilla slice cake to take away. The taste was good and the creamy part reminded me of the popular german dessert called bee sting cake. I just didn’t like the top and bottom puff pastry too much, which could be replaced into a more fluffy batter for my taste buds.

No service at all stood at counter waiting to place my order but not even a hello, good morning or acknowledgement of being in the store.

When you need to eat sweet treats you come here. And today it was for a vanilla slice known as one of the best in Melbourne.
There are lots of sweet choices as well as some savoury pies to choose from. Large cheesecakes, mid ales right up to wedding cakes on offer.
There are only a few chairs and tables inside if you wanted to stay and eat but in warmer months you can sit outside and watch the world of Nicholson Street go by.
Staff are very friendly and helpful.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly sky. Good parking out the front.
A must visit.
