I went here two years ago for a birthday dinner and had their steak and frites, and it was the best thing ever! I use to compare all the steaks I had to this restaurant and would constantly look for places that just MIGHT compare. I came back and it was unfortunately just not the same… their steak felt fake and rubbery and it was dry – definitely not like what I had two years ago… I’ve had better steak at chipotle or other fast food joints lol. It use to be so red and juicy (I get mine medium rare) and the meat MELTED in your mouth. Not anymore. I don’t know if it’s a change in inventory or change in chef but this was very disappointing for me. We also had the french onion soup which was way too salty – my partner and I didn’t even finish a quarter of it. My partner had the gnocchi and it was good for a few bites but the flavour was almost too much tha your taste buds just get tired. I’m giving two stars because the server , ambience and environment is nice though.

I saw the winter eat menu and came here. My favorite was the first course, Tete de Cochon Croquette. It was absolutely delicious, thanks to the lady who recommended it. It looked normal on the surface. But once you bite into it, the tender pork knuckle accompanied by mustard, swept through my mouth. The pickled carrots that came with it cut through the greasiness. I was slightly disappointed with the second course. It got a bit too rich for me halfway through. The dessert was a nice end. I look forward to seeing the new menu next time.

The French was a delicious dining experience, with attentive service and fresh ingredients, they left nothing to be desired from a nice dinner. The duck break l’orange was absolutely spectacular, with sauces that will blow you away. Make sure to leave room for dessert, because the lemon tart with blueberries was also a show stopper. Great place to go for a celebration.

We were greeted as we walked in. Staff were very friendly. Our server is very knowledgeable and attentive. We ordered “for the table” starters, and also the main course, all arrived in a timely fashion.
Food was very tasty. Oysters were quite big and divine, We enjoyed the  duck à l`orange, Gnocchi, and steak-frites very much. Desserts were amazing, creme brulee, chocolate cheese cake a la basque.

Probably at 4.5/5. Went for Wed 24th Dec lunch. Chicken Cobb salad was very good & quite large quantity, being generous on chicken breast & avocado. Gnocchi with mushroom & truffle was good as well. Almond trout was quite disappointing, very thin fillet and small sides which didn’t go well in my mind (almost raw cherry tomatoes, hard green beans but perfectly cooked potatoes). A bit blend.. and $29. So ended up $93 before tip for 3 mains. A bit on the high side but taste was good.

The French is my idea of a perfect brunch. Sunlit bistro vibe, warm service, and plates that hit every note—silky eggs Benedict with a bright hollandaise, insanely flaky croissants, and brioche French toast that’s pure comfort. Coffee is excellent (hello, second latte), and the mimosas don’t skimp. Everything feels thoughtful without being fussy, and the pacing lets you linger and catch up. If you’re looking for a relaxed, polished brunch that tastes as good as it looks, this is the spot.

It has a very cozy and peaceful atmosphere, without loud music.
The staff are very kind and friendly.
We ordered a burger, ricotta gnocchi, and the maison salad.
The salad tasted amazing, and the burger had a unique and delicious flavor.

One of my favourite restaurants in downtown Hamilton. Never had a bad experience ever. Amazing lunch spot and fantastic dinner as well. We had an app, some drinks, great entrees and all 3 desserts offered. No complaints and the staff is always friendly and inviting. An absolute absolute must when in downtown. Thank you for always giving us a great experience.

We visited The French as two families and had an absolutely incredible experience. The service was outstanding — extremely helpful, highly professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm and friendly. You could truly feel that the staff love what they do.

The food was out of this world. Every dish was exceptional: the tartare, oysters, steak, gnocchi, and the belly pork were all perfectly prepared and full of flavor. To top it all off, the espresso martini was phenomenal.

Wow — an unforgettable evening. We can’t wait to come back!
