The Freakin Rican Restaurant Specializing in Authentic Puerto …
Reviews
My wife and I visited this restaurant this past Saturday. We moved to Teaneck three years ago and always make an effort to support Puerto Rican businesses, so we were genuinely looking forward to trying this place.
Starting with the seating: the two-top tables are extremely small, and the chairs are uncomfortable. Space quickly became an issue once food arrived.
For appetizers, we ordered bacalaitos and calamari. The bacalaitos were overwhelmingly salty, as if the cod wasn’t soaked properly to remove the salt. The calamari were spongy instead of crispy.
We specifically asked the waitress to hold our entrées until we finished our appetizers, but that request wasn’t followed. The entrées arrived while we were still eating, and because of the tiny table size, both appetizer and entrée plates couldn’t fit at the same time.
I ordered mamposteao, which costs an extra dollar, but it was missing several key ingredients—no chorizo, no sweet plantains, no cilantro, and no diced peppers or onions. It was also very dry. Mamposteao should be moist and flavorful, almost frittata-like, and this was neither.
The steak was extremely disappointing: it had no flavor and tasted very gamey. My wife ordered chicharrón de pollo, but it looked more like fried pork. It was also flavorless and came without any dipping sauce. The arroz con gandules was gummy and lacked seasoning.
Dessert was just as underwhelming. The flan was hard, oddly shaped, clearly overcooked, and tasted like burnt sugar. The bread pudding was bland and pale.
Overall, we left very disappointed. I’m not posting this review to get a response or a free meal—just to share our genuine experience. The one positive note: we did like the avocado. Photos attached.
My husband and I stopped by on a weekday afternoon for a late lunch. Since they just opened, it wasn’t crowded at all, which made for a relaxed and pleasant experience.
He ordered the jibarito sandwich — huge portion and packed with flavor. I had the shrimp in garlic sauce, and it tasted like a delicious home-cooked meal. So comforting and well-seasoned.
We’re definitely fans. I love having a spot nearby where I can grab pernil, pasteles, or mofongo when I’m craving Puerto Rican food but don’t feel like cooking.
We wanted to try the fried calamari, but they were sold out — saving that for next time!
Will definitely be back.
The pernil was tender, juicy, and falling apart with that rich garlicky flavor that hits you instantly. The arroz con gandules was perfectly seasoned — not dry, not bland, just right. And that mofongo? Packed, flavorful, and soaked in all that goodness. Every bite felt homemade, comforting, and real.
Nothing tasted rushed. Nothing tasted commercial. It tasted like Sunday at abuela’s house.
If you’re craving authentic Puerto Rican food that actually feels like home, The Freakin Rican delivers. Absolutely delicious from start to finish.
I see now why people rave about the pasteles, they’re sooo good! The chicharrón de pollo was crispy and full of flavor, and the pernil was tender and perfectly seasoned. Everything tasted fresh and homemade.
The vibe is relaxed, the people are kind, and you can tell the food is made with love. Great spot when you want real Puerto Rican comfort food.
