In the mid 1700s pioneers came from other colonies to Florida while it was still an unsettled land handed off to Great Britain by Spain. These people were woodsman, cow herders and frontiersmen from Virginia and Maryland; they could live off the land by hunting and fishing. The term ‘Florida Cracker” is believed to come from the sound that their whips made as they cracked them while riding horses to herd the cattle. Still, others say it comes from the crackling sound of dried corn as it was ground to make cornmeal which was a staple of their diet. Florida Crackers are the original Cracker Cowboys. The term still remains to differentiate the pride of Floridians who were born and raised here for generations.

Food was ok, perhaps not worth the price. If you have to wait more than 15 min to be seated, move on. I ordered the shrimp n grits. Although the taste was good it was the simplest shrimp n grits I have ever had. The coleslaw slaw was a bit warm and the potato salad was pretty good! The restaurant itself was clean and the staff friendly.

Been here many times and have had good and bad experiences. This one unfortunately was a bad one. The staff was great and accommodating. Jo , our server was very pleasant. The food on the other hand was on the low scale. The crab cake was terrible and the shrimp were rubbery. This place has been here for many years and has a great spot St Augustine. I hope that my next visit will be better. I do have to include that the manager did acknowledge our complaints and apologize.

This was such a fun find! Just wandering down St. George’s St, and stumbled across someone giving samples of fried green tomatoes. Wow. Definitely hooked! These fried green tomatoes were delicious, perfectly seasoned, and they have their own house made sauce that is wonderful. Our server, Tori, was attentive, and the food came out way faster than we thought, but clearly very fresh. I went with the fried green tomato BLT, and it was so satisfying. With the red potato salad, it was balanced and filling. It has a great variety of options, while not being an overwhelming decision. Also, she was hilarious and gracious, making it a wonderful experience all around.

Good size plates for the high price.
The soup is pretty spicy, if you like that. The new England clam chowder is medium thick but taste good. The shrimp wrap is filled with simp and veggies but the dill dressing really doesn’t go well. It makes it bland. Excellent service. Great fries!!

My family and I love the Florida Cracker Cafe. Everytime we are in Florida, we are going to St. Augustine to go to this restaurant. The food is amazing and my family loves the shrimp and I also always got a delicious vegetarian black bean wrap even though it’s not on the menu.
The staff is always very welcoming and nice and the atmosphere is amazing.

Nice old-school cafe. Great service, decent prices. We tried the gator strips appetizer and it was tasty. Crab cake sandwich was good. Fried green tomato BLT was good. Not amazing or fine-dining, but we would eat here again.

The host made sure we were seated as soon as a table was cleaned. The waitress was very good and made sure all are needs were met. The food was really good. The beer was Ice cold. My wife and I loved it. Nice place to eat and drink.

Enjoyed dining here. Casual fun atmosphere. Staff is friendly, efficient and treats you like family. The camaraderie shows and is fun to watch.
Started with delicious Conch Fritters and wine. My partner enjoyed her fried fish sandwich. My grilled Mahi sandwich was the best fish sandwich I’ve ever had. It was cooked perfectly.
Went 7PM on a Friday night and enjoyed sipping our wine and beer and food while listening to a live singer. Very pleasurable as we could still enjoy conversation while the singer played in the background. We sat inside but there’s outside tables under a tiki style roof closer to the singer. Outdoors is pet friendly and one couple even brought their well behaved dog. Next door is a homemade candy shop- threw in a photo of that also.
Overall, this was a warm, friendly fun experience with delicious food. I will be back!

Absolutely love this place. I had the blackened Mahi Mahi & a bowl of chowder soup. It was delicious. Friendly atmosphere & wonderful caring staff. Anthony was great fun to chat with & he has great knowledge of the history of St Augustine. Family friendly & they cater for any size party. They also have outdoor sitting & live music. I’ll be back for sure, love The Florida Cracker!
