Hands down the best fish and chips we’ve ever had! Everything was hot, fresh, and perfectly crispy. The fish was flaky and the batter had that ideal crunch without being greasy. We also tried the battered sausage and were really impressed – not too salty and you could tell it was good quality. Even the homemade curry sauce was spot on. We loved every bite. Can’t wait to go back!

If you are looking for a standout chippy in Southsea, The Fisherman’s Kitchen on Clarendon Road is a must-visit. It successfully bridges the gap between a traditional “local” and a trendy seafood bistro, offering a fresh, modern take on the British classic.
One of the first things you’ll notice is the atmosphere. Whether you are popping in for a quick takeaway to eat on the nearby common or choosing to dine in within their stylish, nautical-themed restaurant, the service is consistently excellent. The staff are notably friendly and welcoming, managing the bustling dinner rush with a level of efficiency that keeps the fast service promise alive. They also offer a convenient “Click & Collect” service via their app, which is a lifesaver for busy weekend nights.
They pride are using fresh, sustainably sourced fish—from line-caught haddock to their signature prime cod. The batter is a highlight: it’s incredibly light, crispy, and remarkably non-greasy. A major bonus for those with dietary requirements is that nearly their entire menu, including the batter and curry sauce, is naturally gluten-free, and honestly, you wouldn’t even know it.
The chips are equally impressive—hand-cut from local potatoes and cooked to that perfect golden-brown crunch. For those feeling adventurous, their “loaded chips” and seasonal specials (like cockle popcorn or salt and pepper squid) offer a nice break from the standard routine.
With its combination of high-quality ingredients, rapid service, and a warm team, it’s easily one of the best spots in Portsmouth for a reliable, delicious meal.

Tourist from Canada here

Staff here were really friendly. May just have you edit your opening times on google a bit cause times you have posted on the door closes an hour earlier.

Never tried plaice and well. Man was it strong. But family got some cod don’t have a picture and man was it bigger than I expected. Tasted nice and crispy. They made a mistake and got me the haddock but they fixed that right away. I don’t mind haddock but I just wanted to try flatfish. And the mushy peas. Well my brother told me to try it and I think he was tricking me thinking that it was something worth trying. Well it was mushy peas, clear cut no other way.

The best fish and chips shop in the Universe. . No joke though. Its amazing. Classic cod and chips was phenomenal as always and we were pleasantly surprised with a new addition. Salt and pepper buttered cod with sweet chilli. Incredible.
And for the people who cannot eat gluten, guess what? Its naturally gluten free too. Coeliac safe.

Food ok … we ordered fish and chips x2 and picked it up. Pretty expensive for what it was tbh. Just standard fish and chips and cod was pretty small. For £38 quid I was expecting something a bit more special but I guess fish and chips is just fish and chips at the end of the day! Plus side it’s apparently gluten free ..

We’ve been regular customers of Fisherman’s Kitchen for some time and have always had positive experiences, which is why this recent visit was so disappointing.

We ordered two large cod, one large chips, and one regular chips, and specifically asked for the chips to be crispy. The waitress repeated the order back to us, confirmed it, and we paid the full amount requested.

When we got home, we discovered that only one regular chips had been provided — the large chips were missing. As we live on a road where parking is extremely difficult once you leave, this immediately caused inconvenience. I called the shop and was advised to return to collect the missing chips. To avoid losing the parking space, my partner waited in the car while I arranged collection.

Shortly after, we received a call stating that large chips had not been ordered, which was frustrating as both of us clearly remember placing and confirming the order. Despite this, we were told we would need to pay for the large chips upon collection. Given the inconvenience, the extra journey, and the fact that the fish was already going cold, this was very disappointing. At the very least, I would have expected the missing item to be provided without further charge.

To add to this, when the chips were finally collected, they were not crispy as originally requested.

We understand that mistakes can happen, but it was the handling of the situation that left us dissatisfied. We hope this feedback is taken on board to help prevent similar issues for other customers in future.

A busy Friday night but we found a seat. The server checked that they had the haddock left before completing our order, which was good. They’d run out of curry sauce which I had been looking forward to, our fault for not getting there earlier! The pea and mozzarella fritter was a delight & fish was beautiful. Great portion sizes and they had scraps! Gave us a lovely sized dish full – very happy northerner!

We first went here a year ago and it’s really good. The batter was light and crispy. The chips were nicely cooked. The amazing thing is that you wouldn’t know that the batter is gluten-free, of which you wouldn’t tell the difference.
