There’s something about dining on the Valdez waterfront that brings out a friendly spirit in everyone. Bold beers, great food, good neighbors, and a breathtaking view seem to go pretty well together. And that’s exactly why we opened the Fat Mermaid back in 2012. Our little harbor-side hub is dedicated to offering a diverse menu that can satisfy any appetite, with options for vegans and fishermen alike. And we’re committed to supporting our community by locally sourcing as many ingredients as possible. Come by for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just to enjoy one of our 20 craft beers. We can’t wait to share the waterfront and show you what’s cooking.

Laid-back hangout offering pub grub such as pizza & fried seafood, plus a bar & views of the marina.

Normally, when I go, I get their pizzas and I have not been disappointed. This time around decided to venture out. I ordered the rockfish basket, and my guest ordered halibut sandwich and Alaska cod sandwich. Presentation on all three meals was great, fries were great, however, all of our three meals were pretty bland. Next time I will stick with pizza.

The pizza and French Dip were pretty good. The Fish & Chips was gross. No seasoning at all. Service was mediocre and the back room we were sitting in was like an old meeting space. Overall, we would eat here again, despite some things we weren’t so turned on about.

The fat mermaid is a must when in Valdez. Great atmosphere, great food, great service. From Alaskan fresh fish to pizza or buddha bowls, they have a great variety of dishes. Besides signature cocktails, they also offer special brew beers. We tried several of those too, really good. Our waitress Albina was amazing. Very friendly, thoughtful and positive vibes. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, the vibe, the food and the live music. Highly recommended. 10/10 (Try the Ube cake)

Food was delicious, we tried Thai curry, onion rings, Pizza and cocktails. Highly recommend this for lunch / dinner. Best place in Valdez. Restaurant has both indoor and outdoor dining facilities. Restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere, servicing was quick and efficient.
Great views of the mountains too 🙂

Had dinner here twice while staying in Valdez. First time didn’t have to wait for table, second time was told 30 minute wait but was actually only 10 minutes. I had the Halibut Basket and it was delicious but too much to eat, lol! A Sundae topped off our meal. Good experience here!

The portions were pretty good but the fried halibut was bland and very pricey. The Harbour sub was ok, but seemed like something id make with what I had in the fridge. The fries were great service was fast and friendly. Good place to eat, but not spectacular.

This is the place to eat in Valdez! The service was outstanding with true Alaskan hospitality. The menu is wonderful and the food we had was simply outstanding! It has been a week since we ate there and we still have not had halibut that came even close to the exquisitely prepared dish at the fat mermaid! The red sockeye salmon was excellent as well.

If you’re coming here for either a long stay in Valdez or simply a short break, you must come here to enjoy a hearty meal. When you first arrive, you are greeted with great staff who are so kind and there to help with anything you need. The building gives very “seashore” and tropical vibes and the atmosphere outside (where I stayed) is so nice.

The food is also spectacular. We got the smoked salmon dip and the crab cakes for an appetizer and a seafood platter as well as a fettuccini alfredo with salmon for the entree; they were nothing short of delicious.

The smoked salmon dish was insanely good. The dip melted in your mouth, in a good way, and tasted like fois gras but salmon. Putting it on the chips was great and tasted like nachos premium. The crab cakes were crunchy and delicious and the dipping sauce was great as well.

The fish n chips in the platter were surprisingly crispy and juicy and tasted wonderful dipped in their tartar sauce. The platter also comes with calamari, fries and garlic shrimp. The calamari has a nice level of crunch but the taste is a bit lacking and bland but all that is fine if you dip it in their calamari sauce. The garlic shrimp was absolutely delicious. It was tangy with a zesty taste but also very garlicky and I think they balanced those flavours perfectly. The fries were crispy and the seasoning was present and the overall platter was delicious.

The fettuccini was creamy and surprisingly had a balanced amount of seasoning which I think is pretty rare in small towns. The pasta was a mix of al dente and soft and it was perfect.

Overall, a great experience and I would come back for the smoked salmon dip alone. My only complaint is that it might get a little pricey. Definitely give this place a try, you won’t regret it!

We really enjoyed our meal. Service was great. I had the chicken Quesadilla off the appetizer menu. My husband had the pulled pork tacos. They have agreat variety of choices on their menu. It was nice to be able to sit outside and enjoy the weather while having our meal.

I absolutely loved the fat mermaid! We had a long wait time, but it was worth the wait. ‘Theo’ played live, which was a lovely addition to our seafood dinner. The calamari was great, and hot. Not chewy in the slightest. We ordered their king crab legs, which was a portion so big we barely had room for our entrees.
The king crab legs came with fries, which I think was a bit of overkill, as so did our entrees.
But they were hot, and fresh and the garlic butter dipping sauce they gave us really just made it melt in your mouth.
My halibut was nice and soft but fried perfectly. Their hamburger was good, not much to say about it.
I had a Cesar salad also with the crab legs which was good and nicely dressed.
Overall it was an amazing dinner and I couldn’t have had a better pick for our anniversary meal.
We shared a lava cake that came with ice cream and my only complaint was it needed more chocolate sauce!
