The raw oysters were delicious. However, when our plates were cleared, oyster liquid spilled onto me. Unfortunately, the waiter didn’t seem to notice.
We ordered the Filet Mignon medium rare, closer to rare. However, the steak was served medium well and quite tough. So we hated to say but asked the waiter that the doneness was incorrect. He confirmed the order and brought a new steak, but it was raw, as if only the surface had been seared. We didn’t want to ruin Valentine’s day, so we decided not to ask them again.
After that, when my boyfriend gave me a ring and we were holding hands and talking, the waiter interrupted our moment to ask, “You don’t want dessert, right?”
I’m not sure whether we were treated this way because we are young and did not spend a large amount of money, or for some other reason. This was the first time I have experienced service like this at a restaurant, and we felt disappointed and sad.
From the outside, Dynamo looks like it’s been around for decades, which I mean as a compliment – it comes off like a 1960s steakhouse that hasn’t been upgraded in years, so I was surprised to find out from my colleagues that it was a relatively new addition (last year or so) to the neighborhood. And it’s pretty spiffy inside. If you have the ability and it’s open, I’d recommend asking to go to the back bar, which is a much more intimate, quieter bar area than its sibling right by the entrance. Also has some serious Mad Men vibes, which I’m into. From what we were told, the back bar is not consistently open and is usually only available when it’s busier. Take advantage of it if you can.
When I stopped by for lunch two days ago, I sat at the entrance bar, which was quiet midday. I got the House Old Fashioned, along with a plain hamburger (medium rare) that came with a heaping pile of fries. The drink was not very good; part of it might have been the generic bourbon – I’m used to the higher end stuff – but mostly it was an overpour combined with not enough emphasis on the bitters. The result was a cocktail that tasted not dissimilar from gasoline. I waited for the ice cubes to melt before drinking most of it, but big miss on a classic cocktail that even with the house spirits cost $20. Too expensive and not good enough. And that also means that if I’d tried to upgrade it with better bourbon, it would have probably cost closer to $30. I will say that the Old Fashioned I had a few weeks earlier in the back bar was excellent – I had it with Basil Hayden and it was well made. A tale of two cocktails.
The burger was fine. It was a LITTLE greasier than it should be, but pretty tasty overall. It was cooked exactly how I asked (medium rare) and since it’s a steakhouse, it showed up with a knife sticking out of it, which is a fun optic. Not bad but honestly wouldn’t get it again because it cost…get ready…$30. I’m sorry, I get that you’re right over by MSG in a pricey area even for NYC standards, but $30 for a good but not great burger is obscene. That’s just an out-and-out price gouge. The fries were actually better than the burger in my opinion, cooked thoroughly, but needed the accompanying ketchup for flavoring purposes. For that prior Happy Hour, we got some of the bougier beef fat fries, which were noticeably better than these as well.
The service both times was decent. I wouldn’t classify either of the bartenders as friendly (especially the one in the back bar), but I don’t need my hand held in these situations. Both bartenders got my drinks and food over promptly, even though the latter drink was lacking, but in terms of efficiency and turnaround time, I can’t argue with the quality there.
Definitely never stopping by for a quick lunch again – the business model here just isn’t set up for it, but if you do, try to hit up their lunch specials/Happy Hour section to lessen the financial blow. What’s annoying about that section of the menu though is that it’s super limited; you can only get two or three of the entree items listed in the normal lunch menu. I’m not averse to spending some Jacksons at lunch from time to time, but $63 for a burger and a drink (with tip) is honestly pretty insulting. You have a ton of options in this city, and unless you have the company card and/or confirmation of the open back bar, I’d keep walking.
The food was delicious. The shrimp cocktail was fresh and meaty—only three shrimp, but high quality. I had the salmon, which was flavorful, perfectly cooked, and light. My friend ordered the French dip sandwich, which looked amazing and came as generous portion with fries. We also had dirty martinis, and they were made to perfection.
Service started off strong—our order was taken quickly and a few different staff members checked in early on. However, once the food and drinks arrived, the follow-up disappeared. We had to wait to order another round after our meal since no one came back to the table.
That said, the overall experience was still fantastic. Great location if you’re heading to MSG or passing through Penn, and the ambiance alone is reason to return. Looking forward to going back soon!
