A new ‘old school,’ New York-style Italian restaurant has quietly opened in Mayfair from former Soho House man Martin Kuczmarski. Formerly group COO at the private members’ club, Kuczmarski said The Dover is a place of ‘unpretentious elegance,’ somewhere for diners to enjoy classic Italian dishes and martinis into the early hours. He said the restaurant uses candles, double tablecloths, and employs a traditional menu, with dishes such as avocado tart, prawn cocktail, chopped salad, spaghetti and meatballs, and lobster ravioli. There’s no vodka rigatoni a la Carbone but that appears to be the vibe. In charge of the food is Valentino Pepe, who studied in Italy before working for Alan Yau and Gennaro Vitto.

Reviews
We started with the Zucchini & Sweet Potato Fritti, which was light, crisp, and a great opener. The Dover Martini was exceptional… perfectly balanced and one of the highlights of the night.
For mains, the Dover Sole was outstanding, beautifully cooked and full of flavour. The Parmagiana pasta was another standout, creatively put together and really comforting. Even the green beans were nicely done.
For desserts, the Cheesecake Brûlée itself was tasty, but I think it would work better served in a jar or cocktail glass so you can crack the brûlée without collapsing the whole cheesecake. The berries on the side didn’t quite land for me. The chocolate praline dessert, however, was absolutely outstanding.
They kindly brought out a birthday dessert, which was a lovely touch — though the waiter definitely needs to commit more confidently to singing Happy Birthday next time!
I’d happily recommend The Dover and look forward to coming back to try more of the menu, especially the spicy raw tuna starter and the cordon bleu main.
The food is good, but nothing particularly special. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back for the ambiance.
The service was brilliant from start to finish – all members of staff were chatty and the friendliness felt genuine.
The menu was brilliant – and all the food was delicious. Highly recommend prawn cocktail and the lemon pasta.
Thoroughly enjoyed and will recommend to friends and family.
We started with some snacks: caviar on potato (delicious) and a lobster roll—both were excellent. I had the pasta arrabbiata, perfectly al dente and spicy, just how I like it. The mains, however, were a bit underwhelming. I had a burger (probably not the best choice for an expensive restaurant) and my partner had a steak. By that point, we were full, and the dishes didn’t impress as much as the starters. Fries were standard.
For dessert, we had a cheesecake. I had emailed ahead to let them know it was a birthday celebration, hoping for a small gesture like a candle or a celebratory drink. We only received a single candle on the cheesecake and a verbal “happy birthday” from the waiter.
Overall, I’d give it a mid-level rating. The food was good, and the setting is lovely, but for a birthday meal, it didn’t feel especially celebratory.
This time we made a reservation for dinner and got a beautiful table in the dining section, the staff is nice nothing more than that but for us everything else is amazing!
The food was great! Big portions and very interesting mix, we would recommend all of their desserts since in the two visits we tried a couple. Since mainly locals sit there the atmosphere was as it should be in dark themed restaurants, nothing too much but just as it should be, romantic.
