The Cutlery
Reviews
The prime rib was really good — great smoky flavor, and the au jus sauce was bomb. The downside was the timing: the main dishes came out about an hour after we sat down, even though we pre-arranged our food orders ahead of time.
Overall, still a great place for a date night with no kids.
Our recent Tuesday evening visit, was quieter. Historically, the quality of food at The Cutlery has been a point of contention for our group, with consistency issues arising during peak hours. However, this visit proved that when the restaurant isn’t bustling, the quality and taste is delicious.
Appetizers: The duck fat fries in the shishito peppers sauce was outstanding. The crispy brussels sprouts was good with a more charred texture than a crispy one.
Main Courses: The main dishes generally impressed. The New Zealand rack of lamb with chimichurri sauce was a highlight, with the sauce perfectly complementing the tender lamb. The oxtail ragu was also good, boasting a flavorful tomato sauce and well-cooked pasta, though the oxtail itself could have been a touch less chewy, in my opinion. The New York striploin was “alright,” not memorable as the other entrees.
Desserts: all three items – the creme brulee, blueberry cheesecake, and the famous Cutlery mudpie – earning high praise in our group.
What truly sets The Cutlery apart is its remarkably dog-friendly policy. Not only are pets welcome, but the restaurant also prepares and serves food specifically for canine companions, making it a unique draw for pet owners.
Having visited The Cutlery four times now, the overarching impression is one of inconsistent food quality, yet remarkably consistent service and atmosphere. The staff is consistently friendly and helpful, contributing to a pleasant dining experience regardless of the kitchen’s performance. Seating options include both indoor and outdoor areas. The outdoor seating is notably spacious and offers a sense of privacy, though it can still be quite loud, especially when the restaurant is busy.
In conclusion, The Cutlery Restaurant offers a charming and welcoming environment, particularly for those with pets. While the food quality can be inconsistent, a visit during a slower period might provide better quality food. With consistently good service and a unique pet-friendly appeal, it remains an interesting option for a casual meal.
My wife and I booked a reservation for 8pm. We were early and were seated immediately with no issue. After 15 minutes at the table I had to get up and ask for water. The waitress promptly brought it out and since it had already been a while we ordered everything. A salad, the half chicken, a pasta dish, and a steak.
After half an hour we got the salad.
An hour goes by, still no entrees.
We are told they’re just waiting on the chicken, almost ready.
I go for two quick walks up and down the street to pass time.
An hour and a half still no entrees. Find a server to ask for an update and he says it’s almost ready and once again mentions it’s the chicken taking time. I tell him we don’t care if it all comes out together we’re starving and they can just send ANYTHING to us.
Finally the foods arrives, led by the elusive chicken, which thankfully was delicious. The pasta dish was a huge disappointment. Steak was fantastic and cooked perfectly.
But we shouldn’t be at a restaurant for 2.5 hours, with a reservation, no desserts, no drinks besides water, and having ordered simple menu items with no special requests or dietary restrictions.
My wife and I came by as walk ins on the previous evening but had just missed last call for dinner and were understandably turned away, but we wanted to check it out and booked dinner for today. We should have taken that as a sign to not come back. If my wife wasn’t pregnant and in need of food I would have left after an hour of waiting POST-SALAD, and I haven never done something like that in my whole life.
The waitress was kind enough to not charge us for the pasta dish (which we didn’t complain about not liking). And the servers were so warm and apologetic that it was hard to be upset despite the ridiculous wait.
We ordered:
– 2 glasses of wine
– Escargo (Appetizer)
– Sensi Farms Salad
– Pork Chop Kurobuta
– Rigatoni with Braised Short Rib
All of the food was prepared wonderfully and tasted really good, including the wine; we had accidentally over-ordered and ended up taking food home. The waitress that attended to us in the beginning took my order for wine incorrectly. A second staff member had delivered the glasses of wine and I had told him that I had ordered cabernet and not chardonnay. He seemed unapologetic and the tone he gave off seemed to imply that the fault was mine for the mistake; he brought over my glass with a bit of liquid at the base of the glass. Our waitress came back to the table to take our order for escargo, salad but we still needed time to decide on an entree; she said OK to that. The second staff member had came back and had taken our orders for the entrees. Our waitress came later to take our order but we had said we had already placed our order for the entrees
I had called the restaurant after it opened at 4PM that same day and spoke with a staff member to request that they bring out a separate birthday cake that I had brought boxed up. The staff member was friendly and had told me that there was a $25 ‘cake cutting fee’ and said that it will be waived because we were only a party of 2. I did say as a matter of goodwill and knowing it would take refrigeration space from the restaurant that I would include some payment toward it in the tip (beyond the tip amount)
After we had finished eating our entrees our waitress had brought out the birthday cake with 2 plates and 2 forks without any knife or birthday candle (+ lighter). My girlfriend asked the staff for a candle to which I was frustrated had not been brought out in the first place. A 3rd wait staff member who had attended us lightly throughout the course of the dinner did bring us a candle but without any matches or a lighter. I did ask for a lighter or matches but none were brought out. It was not communicated to us what became of that request. It was a very awkward situation, and I am glad that my girlfriend during this entire time took it all in stride. At that point I chose not to ask for a knife to cut the cake, nor did I ask again for matches or a lighter. I asked our waitress for the check. I tipped 10% + $20.00 toward the restaurant in holding the cake. If the Cutlery management does read my review and has any wherewithal to do so, I would like the tip I paid the restaurant to go solely to the 3rd wait staff that did make an effort, let alone a conscious effort to try and provide good customer service for an establishment that charges $100 per head in the capacity that we ordered. It seems to me that at least from last night the wait staff were out of sync. I know that every person and businesses can have off days but I felt we were both disrespected
A good friend had recommended the prime rib to me back on Monday, 1 day prior to the dinner. He and his friend had a great time, and for that I am glad. Although I believe I would enjoy the Cutlery’s Nakamura prime rib, I do not wish to dine at this restaurant ever again. I would not trust the Cutlery’s staff to be able to do event related requests. If you are to go there for strictly dinner, I think the experience should be completely fine
ATMOSPHERE:
It’s a casual vibe with dark decor and mood lighting. A nice mix of music played overhead. The bar area is open-air but air conditioned, with a few bar seats and high tops. A traditional dining room is off to the side. Outdoor seating wrapped around a forth of the eatery, with shrubbery for privacy from the road. There is an actual barbershop on the backside of the restaurant which is run by the spouse of the owner, according to our server.
RESERVATIONS:
We reserved via OpenTable about two days prior. Only counter and outdoor types were available. Definitely recommended if you prefer to sit indoors.
PARKING:
A small, free lot shared with other businesses is right behind the restaurant on 9th Ave. It looks like it belongs to the neighboring apartments but it’s not. Simply check in with the friendly attendant.
MENU:
Backlit menus made for easy viewing. Nice cocktail list. Seafood & meat apps, salads, grilled meats, pasta, kids menu & desserts.
BEVERAGE:
Mojito
Excellent version with an intense mint flavor.
FOOD:
Charred Romaine Caesar Salad
Served warm, the salad had nice char to the leaves with a unique smokiness from the grill. The sweet bread croutons were a positive first for me. The dressing was more tangy than creamy. Recommended.
Mushroom Medley
Literally swimming in garlicky butter, it needed more seasoning or salt. Enough for two to share.
New York Striploin
My absolute fave cut of meat was naturally flavorful and perfectly medium rare. Though I’m unsure why it sat in a puddle of oil since it was grilled.
Ribeye
The spouse loved and devoured it. It had a similar oil puddle as well.
Fire Roasted Corn
Damn, these were really good and big enough for four to share. Nicely grilled & sliced cobs sprinkled with parmesan and bathed in garlic butter. Highly recommended.
DESSERT:
Mud Pie
I’ve never had a mud pie in my favorite trifecta of chocolate, vanilla & coffee flavors. Traditional Oreo crust, whipped cream and dripping with chocolate & caramel syrups. Highly recommended.
SERVICE:
We were 15 minutes late so we had an understandable maybe 5 minute wait to be seated.
Female server was friendly, professional and checked on us throughout our meal.
OVERALL:
Good food at affordable prices. Wish they had a baked potato option.
