Chicken On Fire in Castro Valley is a true mom-and-pop gem that we’ve been coming back to for years. The chicken is always perfectly crispy and crunchy and made fresh every time.

The side of fries are always hot and crispy and make a great side order. The side salad is also helpful at keeping your mouth cooled down from the heat of the freshly fried chicken as well as the spicy sauces!

My wife and I usually split a medium order of wings and do half medium spicy and half spicy hot, which is the perfect balance for US.

The owner is incredibly kind and always checks in to make sure everything is good, in our lives as well as the food, which really adds to the experience.

Consistently fresh, crunchy, and delicious-this place never disappoints!

Simple menu that has been perfected.

Protip:
-Dine in (fried chicken is best eaten immediately after its been cooked). When mixed with sauce, it will not be a crunchy if you let it sit
-honey glaze sauce is the best one
-spicy medium is not very spicy but still flavorful

This place came highly recommended as the best fried chicken place in East Bay, and I think that might have to agree! We ordered to go and it was clear that they make the chicken fresh – taking the full 30 minute or so to cook. We ordered a medium flat wing combo (sweet & sour as well as soy garlic), and it was very delicious. Chicken was perfectly fried, tender & juicy, and at the right size (some places have wings that are either too big or too small). And, the way it’s prepared for take out preserves the crispiness (and we had a 20 minute drive). I would be prepared to air out the car though, haha!

The sweet and sour was a new flavor for me, but it actually worked out great! I still mildly prefer the classic soy garlic, but both are winners. Highly recommend!

Love taking my family here. Wide tables, perfect for families and friends. This chicken is to die for. I honestly don’t know how they get it so perfectly and evenly crispy while being super moist inside. It’s a true art. Pricing is great for what you get. Fries are also very good and crunchy. The place has a nice and comfy feel to it. Sometimes they have only one person servicing which could be better but most of the time it’s perfectly fine.

Ordering is simple – drumsticks or wings or a combo of them with one side, and choice of two sauces to coat the Korean-style breading. Each gets rice and either pickled radish or a slaw with a lovely, light dressing. The chicken pieces are generously portioned, and the breading crunchy and plentiful.

I got to try four sauces in all: spicy hot, spicy curry, soy garlic, and sweet and sour. The spicy hot isn’t too hot at first … but the heat grows on you. The spicy curry was mild and sneakily addictive. Soy garlic was a nice contrast to it, but I think the spicy hot is the more fun choice. The sweet and sour didn’t leave much of an impression on me. Overall, the sauces were milder than I expected, but hit the spot.

I almost forgot the potstickers starter! Perfectly fried & delicious. I enjoyed nursing a grapefruit soju throughout the meal as well.

The restraunt is small, simple and very neat and clean. Wait staff is friendly and attentive. It appears most of their chicken is to go orders. This is the BEST fried chicken I’ve had in my entire life. I managed a KFC in the late 60s when their chicken was good. Not this good but good. I like to cook and have tried various fried chicken recipes. I get very close to The Chicken on Fire chicken. But their chicken is as good if not better than mine and always perfect. I only get wings. These wings are extra large and fresh. The drumsticks are very good and it isn’t that I don’t like them, I do! I prefer wings as my favorite piece of chicken. The chicken comes to your table hot, perfectly cooked with a crust that that shatters when you bite it. If your a first timer I suggest getting the sauce on the side so you can try each type that is of interest to you. It’s best if you let the chef sauce the chicken in kitchen if you know your sauce preference. Its coated better and the flavor is evenly spread across each piece. So if you know the sauce you want just order it with the chicken. The sauce does not bother the crackingly crisp skin.
I always order enough chicken to have leftovers. Just reheat on low power in the microwave (high-power over cooks and drys the meat). It’s still crispy or enjoy cold from the fridge.
I was in the restraunt a few months ago and there were 3 people dining on their chicken order. As they were preparing to leave the waiter gave them two large bags with chicken to go. I asked them if they were having a party. They said no they came in the day before while staying in CV, liked the chicken so much they came in the next day to have more and were now taking chicken back for friends and family in Washington state. They laughed that they got 2 large orders hoping at least one made it all the way home.

Tremendous working class chicken and sides, at a restaurant that really knows how to do it right. I got the small order of chicken medium spicy which was perfect and a glazed sauce with crunchy skin reminded me vaguely of pineapple teriyaki, but better, and the chicken was utterly tender and delicious, and the onion rings I ordered on the side were perfect example of good old school onion rings with a thick batter and fresh hot onions inside.
I recommend this place when you want no muss and no fuss and just want to get some good chicken this is the spot!

Wings were cooked perfectly. The spicy regular had good kick but was not painful & had a nice flavor. The soy ginger was very tasty as well. Could have used some additional sauces for dipping as they only offer one “house” sauce that is kind of like a… watered down ginger ranch? Wings are served with a cabbage “salad” (more like cole slaw) and white rice. Onion rings were good. Overall it was a good experience that satiated my wing craving quite well.
