Closest thing I know in the Bay Area that’s resembles the originals… and I should know since I lived in south Philadelphia. It does a good job copying it but the portions are smaller (ex. A regular cheesesteak’s in Media, PA would be a Philly cheesesteak with DOuBLE steak at this shop). This shop btw is usually quite consistent compared to others in terms of quality.
Word of advice: Avoid the combo since their soda machine isn’t great. The Pepsi and whatever Sierra Mist was replaced with tasted off every time.

Terrible customer service + demanding ID for a sandwich???
So a few weeks ago I ordered a cheesesteak ( via the Cheesesteak Shop App ) from this Castro Valley Shopping Center location which I have done maybe 100+ times before and when i was at the register to pick up the woman demanded to see my ID to pick up my order? WHAT THE HELL ! Is that not a bit far? Seems like an invasion of privacy to me. And also the attitude with it was insane. How is having the name, order details, and phone # not enough to verify pick up? Do you need a DNA sample also? I feel and felt violated and disrespected and it has not sat right with me since! THEN I check your locations reviews and other customers feel the same way. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, Im literally still offended and pissed off weeks later. I hope you guys get it together and correct the situation because this is unacceptable

I ordered a large Philly cheese fries chicken and when I got the order it was in a small container.
I ask the lady employee if this was a large order and she said yes they just put it in the small container because they ran at a large container boxes. I also asked her about the amount of food that was in the small container and she said it was the same amount they would put in a large container. Now how I think is if it’s a large order it should not fit in a small container box, this means that we’re all getting cheated when buying Philly cheese fries because it’s the same amount that fits in a small container or they just gave me less food one or the other. But I feel very cheated for the price that I paid for it and was very upset. I don’t think I want to go again

Portion sizes has decreased but not the prices. My order was three/forths less than I previously received. No longer worth the money. Not happy at all! I feel cheated. Ordered a few things at full price and got a extra small Portions with each. They just lost good customers from my household. Don’t waste your time or money with this place. Highly upset with what I received!

Seriously so good. I came in around 1:30, today, 10/2, with my dad, and while I did try to apologize for his rudeness towards the cashier, I did want to leave a review commending her & her team. She delivered excellent customer service and explained the sandwich sizes, which I had planned to ask about. I ordered the Gilroy, which, with the whole garlic cloves was a hit! Thank you

I had a really disappointing experience at this cheesesteak shop. When I went in, the employee Abbi was incredibly rude to me for no reason. What made it worse was the inconsistency in how they handled my payment.
Yesterday, all they asked for was the last four digits of my debit card — no problem. But today, Abbi suddenly demanded both my physical debit card and my ID, and did so with a really rude attitude. There was no explanation, just attitude and suspicion, even though I was just there the day before with no issues.
It felt unnecessary and honestly disrespectful. If there’s a new policy, fine — but there’s a right way to talk to people, and this wasn’t it.
You’ve lost a customer. I won’t be coming back, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone who values basic courtesy and consistency.

First of all: the cheese steak was actually very good, also my children enjoyed it a lot and they know their cheese steak. I’ve been to Philadelphia, PA to try different cheese steak places – and here they are kind enough to have posters on the wall with the most famous cheese steak venues in Philadelphia with a bit of history behind them. It’s a very nice touch. To me the best cheese steak in the bay area is Jersey Joe’s in San Carlos, but it’s far, and recently i don’t think it’s as good as it once was. So i was eager to discover another venue with a great cheese steak. This place is pretty convenient but it’s small – OK not a big deal. They do not serve beer – which is very annoying. However, the cheese steak is very good. So why the three stars? They only open at 11AM, which is a bit late to start working, isn’t it? I in fact had to wait at a park nearby. However, and this is the big deal, i had to wait, without warning it would take so long, for 55 minutes !!!! In order to get my order. This is fast food, I was there with three children and we just ordered two regular cheese steaks, nothing out of the ordinary. There were at least two staffers behind the counter, three at some point. It seems to me one person was working one order at a time, instead of getting enough meat on the skillet for all the people in the shop at that point. It was REALLY painful to wait, because there was no information whatsoever how much it would take. Oh and ordering online doesn’t help, I was talking to other people while waiting and they too had to wait almost an hour even if they placed the order online. It’s absolutely incredible. To the owners of this venue:
1) wake up early and open at 9AM!
2) cook the orders at the same time on the skillet! Don’t wait for ONE cheese steak to be ready before reading the next order (guess – another cheese steak) and start working on it!

Habit forming without a doubt! I have been hooked on these ever since my first one in Walnut Creek, way back in the 80’s!! Little place next to McDonald’s which are both gone now. Today I had a King of Philly w/bacon thrown on, oohhh sooo yummy! Still only take out, but always tasty and filling. I WILL BE BACH!

Still, one of the best deals and one of the best cheesesteaks in the Bay Area. Skip IB’S and their lousy low quality no flavor wannabe cheesesteaks, The cheesesteak Shop as first class mink, cheese but most of all these guys really know how to put one together. Everything is fresh and hot, fries are good, and the place is always clean as a whistle..

I had never seen this cashier before, but he was friendly, polite and very helpful while I was ordering. He also checked to see if I was signed up for the loyalty club so my purchase earned points for upcoming discounts. I highly recommend to get King size sandwiches!!
