This historic restaurant at milepost 241 was the first to open on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1949. At 6,300 acres, Doughton Park is the largest recreation area along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here you will find 30 miles of trails, two historic cabins, overlooks, a picnic area, campground, and more. Come dine, hike, and explore!

We came up today with our Tarheel MINI club. We had approximately 15 cars and 25 people. I had called Friday to let’em know we were coming as a simple heads up. 1/2 our party wanted to sit outside and the rest inside. The staff couldn’t have been more gracious, timely, organized, or attentive to our large group. We were in and out right at an hour. Prices were fair and the pimento cheese dip and chicken and dumplings I had were delicious. I’ve been dreaming of coming here for a long time. We are SO HAPPY to see this place up and running and thriving even with the BRP detour going the other way now. Our club has donated to and supporters of the BlueRidge Parkway Foundation and we are happy to support their causes in places like this.

My wife, our dog, and I had lunch here yesterday, and let’s be honest – the food is underwhelming, but you’re absolutely coming for the experience, and what an experience we had!
We decided to eat outside since the temperature was perfect and it was pleasantly overcast. Since we arrived after the lunch rush, they weren’t very busy, which gave us a nice, relaxed atmosphere. My wife ordered a burger and fries while I went with the salad plate, which came loaded with pimento cheese, egg salad, tuna salad, and chicken salad.
The pimento cheese was absolutely stellar – a perfect 10 out of 10! The egg salad had a surprisingly runny consistency, but the flavor was surprisingly good. The tuna salad was decent, nothing special. The chicken salad, however, was my least favorite – dry, a bit stringy, and seriously underseasoned. My wife’s burger was simple and fine, but her french fries had been fried to within an inch of their lives. I’m not kidding when I say there was literally no potato left inside – she bit the tips off one fry and you could blow air straight through it like a straw!
But here’s the thing – you’re not coming here for culinary excellence. You’re coming for the gorgeous scenery and the memorable experience, and boy, did it deliver! The building is absolutely lovely and the outdoor seating is incredibly comfortable. While we were eating, Mother Nature decided to put on a show with a sudden downpour! We found ourselves huddled under an umbrella with our dog as the rain absolutely poured down around us. Trying to finish eating! It was hilarious, fun, and definitely unforgettable.
So yes, the food might not win any awards, but the setting and potential for adventure more than make up for it!
To those about to nosh, we salute you! Bring your umbrella!! ☂️

The bluffs is an exclusive getaway on the Blue ridge parkway. We enjoyed our visit as well as the atmosphere, service and food. They have several special that are delicious but known for the fried chicken. The meatloaf sandwich was good as well as the salads. Parking is just enough to accommodate a fairly good size crowd during peak season but not a mad rush if people with it a wait. The parkway is closed in both directions on either side for maintenance which is great they are trying keep up this great place. The renovations are nice and well done and nice environment to eat relax in while traveling. I recommend coming at least once to experience The Bluffs at Doughton Park.

We stopped here after hiking, it was delicious! The atmosphere felt like it was an old school diner feeling. The food was also very tasty! Definitely would recommend the biscuits and cornbread with apple butter and honey butter. Come here if you’re in town, you won’t regret it!

Call for reservations. We were told it could be as much as a 2-day wait. If you remember the Bluffs, the menu is different, the decor is the familiar. The gift shop much smaller and separate with the rangers station and displays bit of history of the area.
Our servers were friendly and helpful. The food was unique and delicious. One had Chicken Salad and one Shrimp and grits. We shared appetizer of Ashe County Cheese Curds and Spiced Candy Apple crisp for dessert.

Oh my gosh – absolutely my favorite place to eat on the parkway and I’ve eaten at the Pisgah Inn and at Peak of Otter Lodge. The vibe is fantastic, the employees are fun (and I really liked the music they played too.) I sat at the bar and had a beer and the shrimp and grits and it was amazing. I’d come back here any time I got the chance!

I got the Chicken dinner. The pieces were smallish, but they more than made up for it with their flavorful seasoning. Probably the best seasoned chicken I’ve ever had, Sorry, Mom. Nice atmosphere and the two employees I dealt with were very friendly and professional. I would definitely return and try more menu items. I took some cobbler home and it was excellent, as well. Bonus: this restaurant is in a beautiful, scenic property, Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I am giving this review after the third day the newly remodeled restaurant, Memorial Day 2021, thus all comments reflect the just opened status and may change. First of all it is reservation only at this point. Call ahead and secure your spot as it is very busy. Second, it is shut on Tuesday but that may change based on Memorial day being a Monday. Third, the ambiance is better than original and yet fully restored. Painted beams, upgraded chairs make it bright and more sophisticated. Perfectly restored fixtures and bar stools, and a very clean up service area makes the 1949 dinner shine. The menu was great but a little thin as they ran out of some items from a massive turn out. The food was great, but be prepared for a little higher prices. We paid $35 before tips for an appetizer, two lunch items and tap water. In my opinion well worth it for the experience and isolated location.

I am very conflicted about this place. The wait to get in followed by the wait to place an order and then the wait to get the order was incredibly long. From my arrival to beginning to eat was at least an hour and a half. On the other hand the food was very good. I would definitely try the fried chicken and the chicken pot pie again. What this place really needs is an efficiency expert to improve their operation. There appear to be enough staff there but their operation is terrible.

Bottom line: Loved my experience and will be back. Excellent location right on the Blue Ridge parkway (easy access with plenty of parking). Food was good. Service was attentive, pleasant, and helpful. I thought the prices were reasonable for the location (maybe a little high, but not outrageous). Overall, I highly recommend stopping here during a drive along the Blue Ridge parkway.

The burger was good (especially the grilled onions). Several other items on the menu caught my eye including the Fried Chicken, Shrimp and Grits, and the Waffles – plenty of options for my next trip. During a hike in Doughton Park, I’m going to try the ice cream as well.
Since there are nice picnic areas in Doughton Park (with amazing views), maybe a to-go order…
At this time, they don’t require reservations (although recommend them on busy weekends and holidays). Normal hours include breakfast 8-10, lunch 11-4, and dinner 5-8 (although they fed me during the lunch to dinner changeover). Since not all of the BRP even has cell service, having WiFi during this stop was great.
Note that they are closed on Tuesdays. And they are currently waiting for their liquor license, so no beer or wine yet.
The Doughton Park campground is a short distance down the road – which is a nice walk.
The Bluffs restaurant was a mainstay along the BRP for many years. After closing for a decade, The Bluffs has recently been renovated and is working to re- become a must stop landmark on the Blue Ridge parkway.
Looking forward to my next opportunity to stop while on the BRP.
