My family and I were on the highway heading towards Columbia, SC and saw a billboard for the Beacon as featured on Diners, Drive ins and Dives. Of course we had to stop and check them out as we love the show. My husband ordered the fried chicken, my son tried the cheeseburger and I tried the fish sandwich all of us got our meals a-plenty which came loaded with fries and mac and cheese or fries and onion rings. If one of us ordered a plenty it would have been enough for the 3 of us. My husband was disappointed with the fried chicken… no seasoning whatsoever. Just battered and fried. My fish sandwich was good, just be sure to ask for tartar sauce with it. The onion rings were not battered enough and on the soggy side. The creamy chicken stew was tasty… just wish it had something in it like a real stew. It was just chicken and the broth.

If you are in the mood for a quick burger and fries, the Beacon has been around longer than me. I had the Chili-Cheeseburger A-Plenty. Burger was great. Lots of fries and onion rings. All hot and fresh. Ready before you leave the counter. The employees were all nice. The tea is great also!

This place is a very unique experience. The menu is on the wall at the entrance. There’s a lot to choose from, and it doesn’t all match the online menu. So beware that and don’t fret. Just do your best. The guy at the beginning of the counter, they call him the caller, will barely be understandable. He’ll know if you’re a first-timer by how you act. He’ll ask if you want it there or to go. You’ll tell him your order. He’ll holler out what the cooks should put on the grill. Then you’ll proceed to grab a drink, tell the platers what sides you got and what you got on your sandwiches, and you’ll proceed to the checkout. There you can pay with card or cash. Note that the tea is a lemony flavor you may not like if you don’t like Arnold Palmers (tea and lemonade mixed). The a-plenty simply means you get a plate or fries and onion rings. A family member told me the whole plate would be covered in grease. My father and I didn’t find that to be the case. It’s not healthy food, but the fries and onion rings we got were pretty well-drained. The onion rings just aren’t crispy, so don’t expect the best onion rings you’ve had in your life. The burger was tender beef, and the chili is beefy with just a little seasoning. The onions on the burger are whole slices. I don’t prefer that and won’t get them again. I like chopped onions on all sandwiches. There’s a ton of seating and a ton of parking. It’s clean but not frilly and fancy. This is a post-World War II icon that you should experience if you’re in Spartanburg, but know that everything will be different from most other places.

Very nostalgic for folks who grew up in the area. Classic dishes at affordable prices. The place is full of energy and definitely a family atmosphere. We had a lot of fun and left with our bellies about to burst. We even got to see Guy Fieri’s picture on the wall.

Food was really good, service was super friendly. You can smell the cooking as you walk up to the restaurant. As soon as you walk in you see the racks and pallets of fresh ingredients they use. Tons of options to pick from. I’m not usually a sweet tea guy but their sweet tea tasted like an Arnold Palmer (Sweet Tea/Lemonade) place wasn’t packed or anything when I got there but they had tons of seating.

This is really old establishment. If you are looking for wine and cheese, not your place. If you want old school atmosphere, a huge plate of food you can’t eat then this your place. Right of I-26 in Spartanburg, SC. If riding by it a must see. Yes, there is a double burger underneath those onion rings and fries That is amazing. Hard to get in your mouth on but these people give you some food! And there is no wait on the food. Always a line by time get to the cash register you have your food. Ample dining area with no frills, huge kitchen staff. I ordered the Beacon Buger A-Plenty which is a double patty with great slaw, tomatoes that style and smotherd with crinkle cut seasoned fries and onion rings that did not come out a box. Tons of options. One of those is way more for two people. Homemade pies, amazing hot dogs, even chicken stew.

Super friendly staff and a buzzing atmosphere. The food was fresh with no wait. Very reasonably priced and enough fries and onion rings to feed 2-3 !!

It’s old and kitschy but if you like greasy spoon drive ins it’s a fun stop. I definitely recommend the chicken stew (so yummy) and the onion rings are very tasty. I didn’t care for the Hash sandwich (the sauce was a bit sweet for my liking… if you prefer a sweater bbq sauce or like sloppyjoes, you might like it). My husband’s chili cheeseburger was quite good and he really liked the baked beans. I’d recommend a stop there especially if you’re a DDD fan and want to add to your “collection ” of restaurants.

No trip through the up-country would be complete without an excursion through the Beacon. I say that but it has been over 30 years since I last passed by. Memory fails but it’s still basically the same. Desperately!! needs a full-scale clean-up. Clearly they keep the food serving areas clean but the walls, ceilings and everything else is covered in dirt, grime and dust to a level that I wouldn’t know how to START cleaning up. Obscenely large portions (not a complaint, but dang) so if you consider sharing meals it’s by fat (oops, I meant by by far) the LEAST costly dining experience one can get, calorie for calorie.
