Absolutely blown away by The Back 40 Smoke House! The food was incredible—easily some of the best smoked meats I’ve had in a long time. Beyond the meal, the service was excellent; our server was attentive and made us feel right at home. To top it off, the atmosphere was amazing and had the perfect rustic charm. We will definitely be back!

Very good food. The waitress was great and even double checked with the kitchen as one of us has a dietary issue. The only disappointing thing is that there was no Brisket and the majority of items on the menu are brisket. The pulled pork was tender and their apple coleslaw was really good.

I read the reviews in advance so assumed 2 things going in: Gabby is awesome but the service can be slow. So we went with plenty of time to make it to our show at showplace.
What we found: the reviews are accurate. Gabby is infact awesome and the service was slow. How can both be true? Because Gabby was working ALONE on a FRIDAY at 6pm – serving and bartending. Sorry there was another person there… in training. So on top of handling the dinner rush she had to train. Gabby is a legend. And if this review was just based on her would it would be way higher. She was funny, transparent and handled it like a true pro.
Now the food: We did not know the back 40 was a hot sauce company therefore we did not know everything would have a kick. But even given that the sides were good. I loved my meal (brisket) but my bf did not like his – his meat looked very dry.
Dear owners – give Gabby a raise, she deserves one and is the reason you have so many positive reviews.

This is one of the best restaurant experiences we’ve had in a really long time. The food was top notch and the service was the best! We had the pleasure of speaking to the owner throughout our meal and was so welcoming, kind, and silly! She really made us feel at home. With the quality of food seemingly decreasing everywhere, The Back 40 does not compromise either flavour or quality and still sells their food at a very reasonable price. In a sea of terrible restaurants, The Back 40 is a breath of fresh air reminding people that food served from a restaurant can actually taste delicious.

Incredible new restaurant in Peterborough. This town really needed an amazing BBQ spot and the owners really worked their magic on every aspect of the experience. The service was fantastic, our server Heather was so sweet and kind and made a ton of funny jokes plus wonderful recommendations.
Our favourite food items were the Ribs, Whiskey Heat Mac & Cheese, The shrimp appetizer and the apple coleslaw.
Truly can’t recommend this place enough! Thank you The Back 40 Smoke House, we will 1000% be back!

The Back 40 Smoke House hosted our Christmas Party with our group of 20 and we all had a fantastic experience!
Darby, the owner, helped us choose an amazing spread — the smoked turkey, beef brisket, mixed veggies, mac and cheese, chili, and nacho queso were all delicious.
The apple blossom dessert was the perfect finish.
Our service was great — Isaac, Gabby, and Zac were all amazing and made sure everything ran perfectly and our group felt well taken care of.
Steve Peconi topped it off with his musical talents and even handled a few requests.

We had the platter for 2-3 and the servings were huggggeee. Could easily feed 5 hungry people!
The ribs were definitely the star but also all the sides (chili, slaw, queso &chips, beans) were all just as amazing!
Would definitely visit again!
Also, the cocktails were out of this world good, strong without overwhelming.

We stopped in as we were walking by while exploring downtown. Truly an enjoyable experience. The owners and staff made our time there very enjoyable. The smoked meat was delicious, ribs were perfect! We had a chance to try their selection of there hot sauces, a nice spread of flavors. The bar tender, still training, even made us her own concoction which was unique yet quite palatable! The Ceasers are great and topped with a bountiful smoky garnish.

Visited this restaurant on a Sunday night, was pretty full but the service was still excellent. Even with how busy it was, our food came out in reasonable amount time. The ribs and were amazing and cooked perfectly. Waitress was friendly and ensured our experience and meal was great. Overall, a great place and inside looked cool. Definitely will be back!

I was very excited to try this place since hearing or it’s opening and was unfortunately a bit disappointed. We shared the Sampler Platter and added a pound of wings as well. The ribs, pulled pork, and brisket were all very good. The pulled chicken was so dry we couldn’t finish it and the wings were over cooked. I would recommend sticking to the beef and pork options.
