I looked up reviews for top places to dine in Bainbridge. This is one of the best,so I gave it a try. I got there a little after 5:00. It’s a great older building. Donna was my waitress. She was great. I ordered the pecan crusted Idaho trout with grits. I tried something I have never had before. It was delicious. Overall this is a nice restaurant, but the prices are a little high. I would recommend this place for a special occasion.

Great place for a mid-week date night!
New Orleans pasta was wonderful…filled with sausage, chicken, meat and shrimp in a tasty sauce. Crab cakes were lump crab meat and no filler. My wife said they were delicious.
We will be back!

Original owners sold it last year, food is still good, but the service and atmosphere isn’t the same. The former wait staff and owner knew us and knew we always came in for my wife’s birthday and our anniversary, she always got a free dessert with a candle for her birthday, not this time. We also always liked the way they would bring you the check in a old library book, this building was once a library, they no longer do that either, we’ll try something different for our anniversary this year.

The food was excellent and the service was even better. Hats off the cook staff. Hands down the absolute best waitress we have ever had. We frequent restaurants across the southeast and The American is at the top of our list. This young woman sets the bar for how a waitress should be.

Went about 1 week ago, still craving the penne pasta they served. Phenomenal food and service. The cornbread wasnt too dry, the honey was great, the burger my mother had was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. The pasta was probably the best thing on the menu. Definently recommend this spot if you find yourself in Bainbridge

Hi.
On Feb 7th 2026, my dad, my sister and I dined at your restaurant for the first time. We came from roughly 2-2 1/2 hours away. I picked your restaurant as the place to my birthday lunch, because y’all cater to those with gluten allergies.
We arrived when the doors opened and were the first to walk through the doors. My sister was greeted by your hostess and my sister asked to sit at any of the tables by windows, so we could see the Jazz Festival(our first time for that as well). But we were told no. That nobody could sit there and that we wouldn’t get service if we sat there. She then said we had to sit in a booth. Which means not all of us could look out the window together.
After we were seated, multiple people came in behind us and all of them were sat by the windows, even though they had more than 3ppl in a group, by the same hostess that told us NO on our preferred seating choice.
This set a bad tone for the rest of our dining experience, our first time eating here! We were all very upset, and not happy. We were also expecting a manager to come walk out and ask anyone about how their food was, as we thought this was the type of restaurant that did things like that.
Thankfully, our waitress was AMAZING and our food was AMAZING as well.
But the hostess behavior of telling us no on the seating, yet sitting everyone else by the windows that came in behind us is a big turn off. I’m not sure if we will be back or not.

As we were pulling into this town, we were reading the reviews and decided to try The American restaurant in downtown Bainbridge. We were able to have a parking place in front of the restaurant. Upon entering, we were immediately seated. Our waitress, Sarah D, did an excellent job of serving us. She was friendly and professional.
Our food and drinks were delicious! From the salad to the entrees, we could not have been more pleased with our food.
If we lived close by, we would come here every week.

I had heard good things about The American, but was very disappointed. We ordered 2 appetizers and 3 entrées The Crab dip was flavorless and the tomato pie was very doughy with 3 slices of tomato on top. The salads were served with croutons that were sweet and tasted like stale scones. The ranch tasted sweet like miracle whip. The steak that was ordered medium was served rare and tasted like white smoke. Our drinks were not refilled and the glasses were small. The zucchini in the pasta dish was not cooked. I searched the fries for one grain of salt and could not find any and there was not any salt or pepper on the table. I don’t know what happened to this place that I had heard good reviews about in the past. The music and the booth seating were nice. The building was neat and looks out to the town square. We went on a Friday night about 7:30. It was not busy at the time we were there.

We had a terrific lunch here. Had heard this place was good, and it delivered. The goat cheese salad was delicious (will start making this at home). All of the wood-grilled entrees were excellent, smoky, tasty and moist. A little weird that sodas came in the can. Did not have room for dessert but they sounded good. Saw lots of locals and repeat customers enjoying lunch.
