I was looking like a scruff after fishing and needed a place close to eat , the front desk was so kind and found me a seat right away.

Sat next to the stone oven , order some food and drinks .
Safe to say that the food was not disappointing! Really enjoy the ham hock with porch egg, Chucky chips. Everything was well executed and taste great! High end taste without the high end price.

Thank you receptionist (female) and waitress for not judging the book for its cover .

If this review help you out if anyway shape or form please give this a thumbs up and give me a follow.
This would greatly be appreciated and help me carrying on doing more review just like this ❤️

This is a lovely little spot. The service was absolutely fantastic. We got a little seat outside after lots of walking so we were so thankful for the sit down. We ordered the selection of cured meats, the chicken souvlaki and the battered south coast haddock, along with a lovely bottle of white. The chicken and fish could have done with more seasoning in my opinion but that’s only minor. I would definitely give this place a visit if you are down that neck of the woods!

We didn’t eat, apart from the freebies. Which were very nice!
Pitty about the clientele. We were sat at a table, and unbeknown to us, was booked out for 6 o’clock.
By 5 o’clock the reserves started to turn up. Local folks, talk about crowding out and filthy looks. It made my wife very uncomfortable. So we left, and found The Dolphin.
£2 a round of 2 drinks cheaper
BTW check bar prices, one round 2 drinks £9:40 next same drinks £10:50.
Thank you.

Had the loveliest dinner at A Bar the other evening! The vibes were great, the food was outstanding and our server Alfie was the sweetest ever! Clearly loves what he does and that came through in his service. Everything else was great but Alfie’s service made the evening perfect

If I could give this place one star I would… They have ruined pizza for me, it was by far the best I’ve had, no other will compare.

My partner and I shared the nduja/scotch bonnet and the chicken/paneer. Both were truly superb. The dough had a terrific flavour, but the toppings on each were perfectly balanced and flavoursome. We started with the cauliflower hummus – something we await to recreate!

The service was outstanding, knowledgeable and friendly, without being over the top, again, a perfect balance.

Wine list fantastic and comprehensive (the reason we came here – (father’s a wine merchant!) maître d’ was knowledgeable and showed us the bottle of wine we were curious about.

Atmosphere was warm, welcoming, relaxed, and the use of acoustic tiles on the ceiling work as both an interesting feature and more importantly to reduce the sound in the bar/restaurant.

I am hugely disappointed we are only in Portsmouth for an evening – had we live in the vicinity, we would surely adopt The A Bar as a regular venue.

A venue for everyone, we were made to feel like long standing customers – warm and welcoming.

If ever in Portsmouth again, we will rush back!

We had dinner here as a small group without a reservation, so we were glad we were able to get a table. The fish and chips were wonderful, but what really hit the spot for me was the dessert. We had requested to separate the alcoholic ice cream in a different bowl for one of the desserts, as we had someone in our party who couldn’t medically take alcohol. And although the waiter first denied our request (which I have to admit was a little strange), after some time he kindly took our request. All in all a great meal!

Good spot for a weekday lunch in a convenient, trendy location close to the harbour. The A Bar has a nice atmosphere inside and a good amount of outdoor seating. It’s also dog-friendly and they offer wine tasting events. Prices were reasonable for the area.

It wasn’t very busy when we visited, so we were seated quickly and service was relatively fast. The food was good overall — my partner really enjoyed the fish and chips, and I had the king prawns, which were excellent. The homecut chips were fantastic. We also tried the mussels in their house sauce. While they were cooked perfectly, the flavour just wasn’t quite to my taste. Drinks were great too — I especially liked the sangria.

Best fish and chips I have ever had! Give this place a shot. You won’t be disappointed. Wish I was in town long enough to try everything on the menu, but who am I kidding… I’d keep ordering the fish and chips lol…

This is going to be our local every time we visit Portsmouth now. I had the catch of the day with caponata and mash, and my husband the fish and chips. The food tasted so fresh, it was all divine. My husband went as far as to compare the fish and chips to that of NZ, which is saying a lot! The staff were very attentive and friendly. Our table gave us a great view of the sunset too. We walked in with no reservation on a Saturday night. Only suggested improvement would be for the staff to pay a bit more attention when cleaning the tables. A really great find and we will be back!
